Chapter 9: The Gift

“You found a buyer already?” Aurelie asked, gritting her teeth and stroking Mako’s neck.

Braxton shrugged. “It just happened today. This afternoon in fact.”

Aurelie could barely look her trainer in the eye as she asked when the horse was scheduled to leave.

“Oh I’m pretty sure he’s going to stay here,” Braxton announced. “Let me get the papers and I’ll show you who bought him. I think you may know her.”

Aurelie followed Braxton to the office, unsure if she really needed to know the identity of the buyer. The trainer waved her in and handed her a paper.

Reluctantly, she scanned the legal wording, skipping most of it until she reached the signature line.

It was blank, but stated “Archimedes” was purchased in full for a set price that day. Braxton had already signed the seller’s line below.

“Uh, it’s blank,” Aurelie pointed at the paper. “The buyer didn’t sign it.”

She looked up to see Braxton grinning like a child on Christmas and holding out a pen.
