Chapter 41: Of Courts and Recovery

With a sob, Aurelie scrambled to her feet.

“Tobin!” she cried. “How did you get here?”

Tobin stepped swiftly into the tent and took Aurelie into his arms.

“I saw the reports on the news and left right away,” he murmured reassuringly in her ear, then he froze. “Are you alright?”

Aurelie had recoiled at his touch, her back searing with pain. Tobin looked at her back, then brought his gaze to match hers.

“How bad?” he asked. “Sit down.”

Aurelie shrugged. “I don’t know. I didn’t look and didn’t ask. They just took care of me and said to go to the hospital.”

Quietly, in the dimly lit tent, Tobin helped Aurelie sit back down on a bale of straw and looked at her back again.

“You need to change this shirt,” Tobin observed. “Did you go?”

“Go where?” Aurelie asked groggily.

Tobin stared, “The hospital? Did you go to the hospital?”

Aurelie looked at Mako, standing still and quiet in his pen. “I can’t leave Mako.”

Tobin followed her gaze. “How is he?”
