Chapter 27: Getting Through
With Anna in the driver’s seat, the friends made their way back to the show barn where they checked on the horses.
Aurelie was going through the motions, but she felt numb inside. Her heart hurt with the intense burning sense of betrayal.
“Are you alright?” Brian asked.
Aurelie was staring at Mako’s water bucket.
“Oh,” she started suddenly. “Yes, sorry. Did you say something?”
“Nope,” Brian gave a tense smile. “Hey, if you need anything, let me know.”
“Thanks,” mumbled Aurelie and shut the stall door.
She ran her hands along Mako’s chestnut neck and then collapsed into a big hug.
“You never let me down,” she sighed. “Good boy.”
Anna drove Aurelie to the hotel that night. She even poured a bath for Aurelie to soak, filling it with her expensive bath oil and even brushing Aurelie’s hair.
“Why are you being so kind?” Aurelie wondered out loud.
Anna paused.
“I was engaged once, before Jason,” she began.
