Chapter 23: Weekend in the Woods

With one hand on the wheel and the other around Aurelie’s shoulders, Tobin drove through the city and into the surrounding suburbs. Soon, the suburbs gave way to countryside, and still the couple drove on.

“Where do you live?” Asked Aurelie.

Tobin grinned. “Just wait.”

He drove for several more minutes before turning down a hidden roadway, stone fences covered in moss and surrounded by trees and bushes. Tobin reached up and pressed a button, causing a black, iron-wrought gate blocking the driveway to swing open.

They then drove down a long, narrow, winding driveway surrounded by evergreen trees. When the trees parted, Aurelie saw a modest, modern-style wood cabin. By the corner of the house, an axe lay wedged in a tree trunk, surrounded by freshly-cut logs.

Tobin suddenly seemed shy. “This is my home.”

Aurelie’s mouth had dropped open. She blushed and continued to look around.

“This is gorgeous,” she whispered. “You must enjoy the inspiration of nature.”
