The Last Man: Saga of the Nightmare Invoker

Why did I get mistaken as an alien by those women? Chris was the holder of the Book of Macabre. A grimoire that could summon its holder's nightmare to the real world. But he was just like your average plain-looking guy. There was nothing special about him, at first glance. He didn't use the power of the book to become a hero or gain wealth. It wasn't as convenient as it sounded, and he wanted to avoid trouble. But that was only true until one day when all men on Earth vanished, and he was the only one who survived. At that time, Chris became the first man to live the dream of all men. Sounded cool. A dream come true. Unfortunately, he was soon brought back to reality after several women barged inside his room, put a collar around his neck, and threw him in a cell. He was mistaken for an alien. Why? The reality wasn't what he had expected, and these women didn't act like in Chris's fantasies. Still, Chris wasn't also the man these women thought he was. His survival wasn't a coincidence. ***** Disclaimer: The art on the cover is not mine. The world in 2043

It was the year 2043.

In this era, humans had expected to reach a new level of advancement in technology. Something that should be reflected in the state of the cities and the people living there.

However, the streets were empty and the buildings looked like they were inhabited.

Tack! Tack! Tack!

After fleeing from the headquarters of the UM, because he was almost killed by beautiful and sexy women in tight black full suits, the last man was back inside his room, playing games. How depressing was that?

His survival should have been something to rejoice over. He should have become the man who would make the forbidden dream of men a reality. He should have been the chosen one. The last man. The ultimate sigma male (not that he knew what sigma male really meant).

But that was a naïve way of thinking. No, he was completely out of the loop. Alien? Him, an alien? How the hell did these women come to that conclusion? And why didn't they believe him?

This reminded him of what happened when he spoke about his theory to the people who were in the same club as him at the university.

"I know that you handsome guys! We all do… That's why we all are here. But man, to despise lucky men that much, to the point that you are theorizing that they will disappear… Sorry… I don't have the words. Even in times like this, I can't cheer you up. But you are not alone. We all don't have a girlfriend!"

"Yes, hang in there man… Maybe you should just give up on 3D women like me. Your life would be better."

"How about we drink…"

They didn't believe him. They all thought that he hated handsome men and created a fantasy world where he was the only man around. Why would someone think like that? How embarrassing was that?

And now, something was crumbling, a paradise was burning in flames. Why did these sexy and hot women treat him like an alien? They didn't even want to talk to him… This was a pretty hard blow for the virgin and single Chris. He would die alone inside his room. This was the end of the story.

'No, calm down, Chris! Don't give up yet!' Chris's fingers stopped moving and he took a deep breath. Yes, this wasn't the end! Maybe his approach was wrong this time.

He thought that after ten years, women would become sex-hungered beasts. He was too full of himself. He realized his mistake. But it wasn't like the members of that organization were the only women around. Nothing was lost yet.

But thinking about it logically, the only explanation for what happened would be that aliens indeed existed and visited this world at some point. Still, that didn't have anything to do with him, did it? He didn't even know how aliens looked, but come on, to mistake someone for an alien. If that was the case, maybe he was living alongside aliens all of this time.

UM was it? They should at least have a way to differentiate their comrades from aliens, right? Or did that mean that the UM was also under the rule of aliens? What a joke.

Wait, wait, wait. If that was the case, all of this would make sense, Chris thought. These creatures wouldn't have any intention to save humans after all, so it was not surprising that they would kill him. Was that their goal? That must be it...

"What is this... Why am I trying to come up with absurd theories...

But it can't be helped..."

After all, how could those hot and sexy women treat him like that? They must be working for aliens, right? It wasn't like they hated him without no reason, right? No, that would be also such a waste. The treasure of mankind was being perverted by old me from space. Unforgivable.

Nonetheless, Chris wondered, what should be his next move considering the circumstances? There should be other women who were still humans within that organization, right? He needed to convince them to join him. But at this rate, nothing he said would get through to them.

"Sh*t! The generator gave out at times like this!"

Everyone had their generator at home, powered by special batteries. Such a wonderful invention. But it still ran out of power when the time came... When you didn't expect it.

"My save! No!"

The room had become completely dark. Chris grabbed his phone and turned on the flashlight. On the phone's screen, he could see that he wasn't receiving any signal. No internet. He couldn't call anyone.

"Gaaahhh... I should go buy some battery," Chris mumbled, standing up from his chair.

However, there was something that Chris missed. But first, how did Chris hide himself all of this time? He used the power of a nightmare. Endless Void. This was one of those nightmares when you continue to fall inside a hole, never reaching the bottom. Still, he couldn't control this power, but he didn't notice anything.

When this power was activated, Chris ended up inside a space that was cut from the outside world, completely. Using this power, he planned to hide for a few weeks until the situation settled down, but when he finally decided to come out, he was captured by women... As such, this was the first time he was going outside.

Chris put on a black hoodie, black pants, and a black face mask then grabbed a bag. He needed to conceal his appearance when he was walking out or he might get assaulted.

"Okay, let's go," Chris said, exiting his room and walking outside.

"It seems like no one's around." Thinking about it, Chris didn't talk with the landlady for a couple of weeks now. Of course, he didn't pay the rent. He felt guilty about it, but it wasn't like he could just come out and say, "I am here to pay the rent. I am Chris from room 5."

"Mmm…" Chris was walking for a while now, but he didn't see anyone. The other rooms in the building he lived were vacant. And the city was completely deserted. Only stray cats and dogs were passing by from time to time. "What the hell? Where did they all go?"

This was the first time he went out of his room apart from going to the UM headquarters. No one was around. And there should have been at least a few hundred thousand women living in this city. He finally noticed that something was weird.

"2043, huh…." Chris read the date written on a billboard. He also date when he was at the UM's headquarters.

The women were just hiding inside their room like him, that was what he thought. A pretty stupid conclusion. Why would they hide in the first place? It wasn't like everyone was like him. But this was not normal.

The UM was one thing, but what happened to the women in this city wasn't something normal. Chris was now more or less aware of that. But he lacked information. What the hell happened during these ten years?

"It's closed!" The store was also closed, of course. Chris peeked through the transparent wall and saw that there were things inside but no sign of humans.

"It seems like I don't have a choice. I will just apologize if there's someone inside," Chris said, opening his bag, and the grimoire emerged from inside.

Then, the grimoire opened on the page containing the nightmare Devil's hands.

"This should do it," Chirs mumbled, closing his eyes and using the green hand, but… "Hmm?"

With the power of hypersensitivity of the green hand, he could create a 3D projection of the entire area inside his head. And, he noticed the figure of two people, certainly women, who were running away from… "What the hell is that?!"

Chris turned toward the direction where the women were and began to sprint with all his might.
