Waking up, Bai Shuixian noticed that she was laying on the bed of Xuan Yueji's room. Of course, she also noticed the pitiful black color that he always wore. As she saw this beautiful depressive color, she smiled to herself wrly, but did not think about it too much and immediately changed into white clothes instead.
Immediately after changing, Bai Shuixian checked herself out in the mirror. For some reason, it became a habit of hers to look in the mirror to see if there were any changes to her body. She had physically changed so much that she began to depend on the mirror to start memorizing how much she had grown up.
Although many years had passed, Bai Shuixian still remembered Lu Lianhua telling her that being mature was not important, especially the body. No matter her size, she would not change internally and should just worry about the matters that she had to deal with using her brain, not her body. However, no matter how much he told her, she was still self-conscious about her short height and flat looking chest.
Bai Shuixian knew that she was a beauty as Zhong Chen told her many times before, including Zhu Jin. The thing was that whenever she read the novels that Xuan Yueji snuck in for her, they always read that the most appealing women were ones with a big bust and tall. Looking like a beautiful fox, attractive enough to distract the emperor from dealing with state affairs.
It seemed that the books had changed her views of how she should look, so Bai Shuixian always wanted a big chest that would fit her height. Even if she could not grow taller, she wanted bigger feet that could wear the shoes with heels like other girls. She also wanted to wear clothes that would enhance her figure just like the other women out in the world.
Only, Bai Shuixian was so closed off from the world, that the only sense of beauty she knew about came from the books that Xuan Yueji bought for her. She also did not know that those beauty standards did not come from reality but idealization. It was the beauty that men fantasize about and the beauty that noble women wanted in order to attract the male in their heart.
However, checking out the mirror, Bai Shuixian saw no change on her chest or bottoms. Heaving a quiet sigh, she left her room and called out Zhu Jin's name. When he responded to her, she told him that she would be leaving the village to deal with something.
"Alright," Zhu Jin had shouted out when Bai Shuixian was at the entrance. "Just be careful! Don't get hurt-!"
When Zhu Jin wanted to yell more words though, Bai Shuixian already left the tree and could not hear the rest. It was only those words that she heard. Even though she heard them though, she did not take it to heart as she thought, 'What in this village can hurt me?'
As soon as Bai Shuixian saw the view of the village, her eyes opened in shock. She then asked herself, 'Did I do this?' upon seeing the bright green leaves of the trees that populated the farm. Even seeing the grass at her feet, she wondered, 'Did I really do this?'
With this surprise, Bai Shuixian had stopped using her qinggong and paused. Pausing, the villagers were able to see her in the iconic fancy white robes, so they all started heading towards her with thanks and praises wanting to be said. She was unknown to all of this as she continued staring into the horizon, seeing the light shadows of the plants that seemed to have grown overnight.
Happily, many villagers yelled out, "Lady Bai, thank you very much!"
There was even a mother that had brought her child to work and told him to thank Bai Shuixian, "Lady Bai, thank you for the seeds! And trees! And… and… everything! Lady Bai, has anyone told you that you look like a goddess!?"
Only when the child said the last word "goddess" did Bai Shuixian come back to her senses. Once again, she was surprised because there was a large crowd in front of her now. She felt that they were not there beforehand, so she wondered where they had come from.
Another child that heard the child shout goddess, also repeated, "Goddess Bai! Mother, I think Lady Bai should be called Goddess Bai instead!"
The child immediately got lightly scolded by their mother out of embarrassment at the loud voice, but upon seeing that Bai Shuixian did not seem to be angry at all or anything, she stopped. In fact, Bai Shuixian was trying to comprehend the words of the children that were calling her a goddess. She wondered, 'I look like a goddess?'
Having a question that she knew could only be answered by outsiders, Bai Shuixian calmly and slowly asked, "I look like a goddess?"
The children, hearing her voice, excitedly exclaimed, "Yes! Just like a goddess from the heavens! Beautiful, light, and kind!"
Looking at the child that screamed the loudest, Bai Shuixian asked, "How do you know I look like a goddess when you have never seen my face?"
"Lady Bai, beauty is in the heart. Not the face," the child proclaimed loudly with a huge grin on her face.
Hearing the words from the girl, Bai Shuixian smiled and said, "You are a smart girl."
Nodding to agree with Bai Shuixian, the girl responded, "My mother also says that I'm very smart! She says that one day, if we get out of here, I can get a good man for myself and not get a horrible man like father!"
Bai Shuixian laughed quietly as soon as she heard the honest words of the little girl. When she stopped laughing, she took out a basket full of red bean buns from her bag and handed them to the little girl. By the time she realized that others could get jealous though, she took out another basket full of dragon's beard candy.
With a kind voice, Bai Shuixian announced, "These red bean buns are for you and your mom."
"Really?" the little girl asked with a shine in her eyes as she showed her excitement.
"Yes," Bai Shuixian nodded. "You are very smart. However, don't listen to your mom when she says you need a man in your life."
"Eh? Why not?" the little girl tilted her head cutely to ask.
Deepening her smile, Bai Shuixian answered, "Because the only person you can depend on is yourself. If one day you husband abandons you, what are you to do?"
"Eh? Hm… That seems right… Then-then I'll listen to Lady Bai!" the little girl agreed after thinking for a short second.
Turning to the other kids that were staring at the baskets with jealous expressions, Bai Shuixian announced, "Come here. I'll give you guys one. Consider it my thanks for calling me a goddess."
Running to Bai Shuixian at full speed, a few kids asked, "Lady Bai, if we continue calling you goddess, will you give us more treats?"
Understanding the antics that the young children were up to, Bai Shuixian answered, "If I have any, I'll give them out. No need to call me goddess. Just continue to call me Lady Bai, alright?"
"Yes, we understand," the kids said one after another as they received their candy.
When the basket became empty and the kids ran away to play by themselves as many of the villagers went back to work, a few parents came up. Some came to apologize for the shameless actions of their child. Others came to thank Bai Shuixian for being so kind and nice to the children as they had not expected her to since she seemed to be from the upper class.
There was also a special case where a mother thanked profusely, "Lady Bai, thank you. Thank you very much. My little girl… she has never had a father in her life and I am too poor to buy her anything nice… Thank you very much."
Even after Bai Shuixian recognized her gratitude, the lady did not stop thanking her. At some point, it started to annoy but also worry her, so she decided to stay longer and watch the villagers work as she paid attention to the middle-aged lady. She did not understand her worry, only her annoyance that she felt, but she knew that it was probably another message from the gods or something.
When many of the children came back to ask their parents if they should go search for food or stay at the farm and discovered that Bai Shuixian was still there, many of them abandoned the thought of searching for food. The appearances that she made were rare, and getting candy and sweets was even more scarce. As they were just kids, it was easy for them to get sucked into what they wanted without second thoughts.
"Lady Bai," a little boy called out with an excited voice as he ran up to her.
Turning her attention from the lady that kept on thanking her, Bai Shuixian responded, "Hm? What is it? Is there something you need?"
Shaking his head, the little boy asked, "Lady Bai, why do you never come out to the village?"
Another child then came up and also asked, "That's right. Lady Bai, it's been almost a month since you've been here, but we've never seen you. Why do you never come out?"
There was even one kid that asked her, "Lady Bai, is it because we're all poor and dirty that you don't want to come down from the scary mountain?"
Hearing all the questions, Bai Shuixian lightly chuckled and answered, "Not at all. I've gone out many times. It is just that I never show myself."
"Eh? Why not?" the little boy who first came up to her asked.
Staring at the little boy with sentimental eyes that seemed to come from nowhere, Bai Shuixian said, "Hm… I wonder why also… Maybe it's because I'm afraid that you guys won't like me?"
"No way!" the children crowded and shouted. "Lady Bai is nice and pleasant! We would never not like Lady Bai!"
Nodding their heads one by one, they all repeated, "Lady Bai is likable and agreeable. We wish that Lady Bai would come out to play with us more!"
Despite knowing that her smiles were hidden behind the silk that covered her entire face, Bai Shuixian smiled and said, "Alright. In the future, I'll come out more to play with you guys."
