Chapter 23

“Well, I think you might be more open.” She looked apologetic. “You’re not very open, Keith. You tend to judge a lot.”

I stared, feeling judged at the moment. I wanted to point to Glendon, point out that he was just as bad. But on the other hand, he wasn’t that successful with relationships either. Only it didn’t seem to bother him. So, instead I snorted.

“I know it’s not easy,” Pat said tolerantly. She was regarding me, a slight frown on her forehead. “For you it’s not, anyway.”

My face was burning again. I felt I had been trapped and labeled. It was true, of course. And it was something I wasn’t very comfortable with—when I noticed it. I looked down at the cards, and tapped the Lovers.

“It was above the center pair,” I said. “What does that mean?”

Anne stared at me. “Didn’t the Tarot reader explain that?”

I tried to recall, then shook my head.

“No. She seemed to focus on the nines.”

“Oh. Well, the canonical meaning of that position is the best or final outcome.”
