The Evil God Beyond the Smartphone - Chapter 01 - Prologue

It all began with your conventional mobile game.

The like in which seen plaster across the front page of an app store and advertized as a place to relax the mind and spirit.

I can't recall its particular genre; it, however, must have been marketed as a generic Idle game, one among thousands and with few distinctive assets.

The game itself was, although appealing, couldn't be said to be particularly outstanding or innovative.

Simplistic miniatures of human silhouette would occasionally traverse across the screen as I, in turn, would watch them slowly trek across the rather extensive diorama where they dwelled.

Their AI was rather intricate and appeared complex.

Which was a notable achievement for such a simplistic mobile game.

Each figure displayed diligence and persistence. Performing tedious tasks pertaining to everyday activities such as cleaning, eating, etc.

They would even occasionally deviate from their usual behavioral patterns to perform some other mundane chores.

It felt as tho I was observing an ant farm.

Not unlike that of the now defunk little sea monkeys you would cultivate as a child, observing them grow and develop.

I could even seldom interact with them by taping on their general outline, as the words '1' would emerge from above their head in response.

Their figures would eventually fade after over a few dozen consecutive taps.

Of course, it still proved taxing to prod my phone screen so many times in succession. Evidently, my finger would ache afterward.

Additionally, although I could harm these little figures, I was still limited in the damage I could afflict with the finite resource of magic power I possessed; the icon located at the bottom of the screen would be diminished with repeated clicks.

And besides, just observing the characters elicited a sense of tranquility, a game to idle away the day in silence.

I would occasionally dawdle for two or three hours, watching these figures.

They for which there were effectively a contoured shadow, performed trivial tasks.

Or at least I did until an eventual calamity struck.

At least for the little guys, it occurred after a spout of binge drinking one night.

"Please, why? How could you possibly say such a thing?"

One day, while inebriated, I arrived home in a sullen mood, as I had just departed from a particular galling discussion with my girlfriend.

While dejected, I decided to run my usual mobile game in the hope of it cheering me up.

Initially, I was uncertain of what to do, just staring at my screen in a stupor.

Eventually, however, I became enraged as frustration and indignation proliferated in my mind.

I found a target in the game to displace my aggression on to.

Unfortunately for the village, found entrenched within a mountain range.

I tapped the screen manically until every remaining character on the screen vanished, ignoring my fingers painful protest.

My hand proceeded in its rapid borage of taps until all my mana had been expended.

Only for the massacre to repeat once more, as my mana had regenerated again.

Having completely annihilated one village, I was greeted by an unfamiliar prompt.

>>> Karma +10.

>>>Congratulations! You have advanced to level two.

It was the moment I discovered a newfound feature. It was for all intents and purposes, quite unique.
