Seaforth sighed. “Julien…”

Julien automatically tensed. Despite knowing one another for years, rarely did they address each other by their Christian names. It meant Seaforth wasn’t about to drop the subject.

“The attachment between you and Leander Mayfield—”

“I don’t want to discuss Leander Mayfield,” Julien interrupted sharply.

“It’s since his disappearance that you’ve been acting so differently. We’ve all noticed it. You didn’t act this way when Tobias Norville disappeared and I can’t help thinking—”

“That some of the rumors may be true after all?” Julien finished for him.

“You know better than that,” Seaforth said sternly.

“You trust me, then, when I say I did no harm to either of them?”

“Then trust me when I say I know what I’m about.”
