“Chance?” Kit’s voice held a new note of concern.

“Don’t worry about me,” Chance said again, more firmly. “You said yourself; finding Lee is more important than anything else.”

“Chance—”

“It’s nothing I can’t handle,” Chance said, and hoped he was telling the truth.

The door closed, leaving him in darkness again. It was the only indication he had as to how much time had passed and it was a poor indicator at best. A man—someone who worked for Morleigh Mayfield, no doubt—would come in to force broth or gruel down his throat before leaving again. He didn’t know how often it was happening, but it was at least often enough to keep him alive. Sometimes, times like now, when his feverish mind cleared enough for him to follow a thought, he would wonder why Morleigh was trying to keep him alive at all.
