The Brown Rose

" What if I say I want to know you more, would you allow me?" His playful expression became a bit serious then playful again. " What do you mean by that? Why should you know me more?" Confusion was evident on her face. " I meant exactly that. I want to know you better, know more than your name, how does that sound?" He asked and looked down at her from above. " There is nothing to know about me. Am just a simple girl with a boring life, well that is what most of my friends tells me. Am anti-social so yeah, absolutely nothing exciting about my life." She looked up and met his focused gaze. ***** A short story of two individuals, ......... introducing: * Isis Dada Dester; a young radio presenter. It's you!

An hour later, Atlas walked into the main house's living room with Dada trailing behind him. The air around him was depressing as he marched forward lifelessly. Behind him, Dada matched his pace. Atlas's trench coat hung loosely on her shoulders to cover her short sleepwear.

Immediately after the duo walked in, Mrs Chase went forward and pulled Atlas closer to the stand alone chaise. Her eyes laced with worry roamed all over his body in concern.

"Ben told us the news and mama is worried about you." Mrs Chase said worriedly as faint wrinkles became visible on the corners of her eyes. Her hands clasped Atlas's face in place when he attempted to look down. Looking up with bloodshot eyes, Atlas did not say a single word back in response which scared the elderly woman.

Still wearing yesterday's wrinkled clothes, he looked unkempt with his hair disheveled. He appeared pitiful and worn out.

" You can cry all you want. Mama is here for you, just let it out. Don't hold it in, let it all out, hmm." Mrs Chase said so seeing the lone tear that streamed down Atlas's face. Her heart ached seeing the helpless and heartbroken expression on her son's face.

" It hurts so much mother. It really hurts." In a low and sombre voice, Atlas spoke while holding his mother's shoulders tightly. His shoulder's trembled non-stop as low sobs escaped his lips occasionally.

Rex who stood by the side with Molly in his embrace looked on with pain visible in his eyes. The weeping Molly in his arms made his eyes teary too. He batted his eyelids with the aim of holding his tears back while he continued to hold her tightly. He kept on sighing time and again.

" You are not alone brother. Mom, dad, Molly and I are all here for you."

Leaving Rex's embrace, Molly propelled him forward to the mother-son pair. Walking to where the duo stood, Rex opened his arms wide to embrace Atlas. He pulled him closer and hugged him tightly as he patted his back slowly to which Atlas reciprocated.

" You are not alone." Rex repeated his words over and over again in a hushed tone. The two man embraced each other in silence.

" But they are gone. Midnight Blue is no more, my friends are gone."

Dada stood by the side with her eyes teary. Her heart initially tightened when she heard that Midnight Blue passed on. She felt very hurt even though they weren't acquainted. Midnight Blue was one of her favourite singers and he was a well known guitarist. When she thought of his first show that she had watched, her tears rolled down her cheeks.

She was a die hard fan girl, and it was deeply embedded inside her. She couldn't do anything about it.

Looking at the hugging pair, something clicked in Dada's mind. An image of a certain someone appeared.

This figure!

This height!

Wait!! This can't be a coincidence, right?

Instantly, she remembered that one time when she bumped into Ash during a signing event after his concert in FlowerTown a year ago. Though the man was putting on a mask at that time, she could clearly see his lower face and his eyes. At that time she had dismissed it as him having put contact lenses on as most artists do, but little did she know that it wasn't the case with this one.

That memory was deeply etched in her mind as if it happened yesterday. Afterall, the bump was deliberate on her part.

Seeing the man standing a few meters away from her, Dada came to a realisation. Her Idol, Ash looked so much like Atlas from all angles, and Atlas personally knew Midnight Blue. Everyone in the music industry knew that Midnight Blue and Ash were two inseparable individuals. They were the best of buddies with an unbreakable bond which was envied by many. Though a few people knew who Ash was, it was the opposite for Midnight Blue as he was a jolly person who frequently interacted with his fans. He was well known to a great population.

Was this a coincidence?

Dada already had her suspicions when she heard Atlas singing yesternight and seeing his similar body figure.

She lifted her head and stared at Atlas's back and her eyes widened.

" Ash?" She muttered uncertainly as she kept her eyes locked on Atlas's back which stiffened hearing the name Dada spouted.

Rex felt this and he let go of Atlas as he stood by the side.

" Ash." Dada repeated again but this time with certainty. She looked at the man who had tilted his head to look behind him.

What Atlas saw was Dada standing there with a silly smile while tears streamed down her cheeks.

" It's you! My idol is you." Saying that, she walked forward and erected herself before him. Tears of joy and heartache steamed down her round face. Her slim, slender fingers trembled as she lifted her hands to touch Atlas's flushed face.

" It's really you." Her words were faint but were vividly heard by Atlas. His eyes scrutinized her closely before he smiled back at her. The smile though could not hide the weariness and dejection apparent on his face.

Mrs Chase cried silently at the scene unfolding before her eyes. Her eyes further wrinkled on the edges.

" Come here." With her arms open, Dada embraced Atlas. She stood on her tiptoes as her hands circled around his shoulders while her head rested on his chest. Without much thought, Atlas wrapped his firm arms around her body as he buried his face on her neck.

Feeling her warmth on his body, his tears rolled down wetting Dada's neck area. In turn, she hugged him tightly as she fought hard to keep her tears at bay.

Thinking of the happy times spent with his mates, Atlas tightened his arms around Dada's waist. He closed his eyes as the memories from their much younger days filled his mind. The memories of when they first met each other, of when they fought and reconciled.

" Tell me it's a dream, please." He muttered onto her neck with his eyes still shut. " Please say something."

" It's gonna be alri..." Dada couldn't finish her sentence. Atlas who was hugging her a second ago was now sliding slowly to the ground.

" Hey, wake up!" With all her might, Dada tried to support him to which she failed.

Rex saw this and hurried to her side. He assisted her as they supported the unconscious Atlas while stumbling to the door.

" Bring me the car keys quickly." He said to Molly as he hurried to the door.
