The Brown Rose

" What if I say I want to know you more, would you allow me?" His playful expression became a bit serious then playful again. " What do you mean by that? Why should you know me more?" Confusion was evident on her face. " I meant exactly that. I want to know you better, know more than your name, how does that sound?" He asked and looked down at her from above. " There is nothing to know about me. Am just a simple girl with a boring life, well that is what most of my friends tells me. Am anti-social so yeah, absolutely nothing exciting about my life." She looked up and met his focused gaze. ***** A short story of two individuals, ......... introducing: * Isis Dada Dester; a young radio presenter. I have feelings too

*****

With nothing much to do in the afternoon, Dada went back home. She strolled to the mini garden behind her apartment, and her eyes scanned her surroundings for a minute before she sat down on the wooden bench by the side while humming to a song.

She was lost in her thoughts when suddenly she felt slight movement next to her. Slowly, she opened her eyes and instantly, she jumped up in shock. She stared wide eyed at the person sitting closely. The man beside her eyed her intently before he too stood up from the bench.

Chris cleared his throat as he opened his mouth to speak,

"Well, am sorry for scaring you just now. I came here to apologize about what happened the other day. I am sorry for the way my friends treated you, and am sorry that I wasn't there to defend you."

A faint smile appeared on Dada's face when she lowered her eyes and spoke. Her low voice carried hints of dullness.

"I understand. It does happens sometimes, so am used to it. Besides, you weren't there so why should you apologize? But, then if you insist then I will try to forget about it but the 'forgiving' part is going to be a bit harder.

I was hurt by their words. It's true that am not ivory skinned, or flawless but that doesn't give them the platform to bully me whenever they want. I have feelings too."

She paused to stare at Chris. The pain in her eyes couldn't be hidden. Trying to master a smile, she asked him while trying to change the topic," You weren't stalking me, right?"

" Is that a joke? I was just passing by from school." Chris rubbed his hands as he answered back with a tiny smile on his face.

" Then how did you know that I was here?"

Chris stared at her without saying anything, after some time he said, "I was at Joey's school to process her transfer letters, also I came to meet with a client in your neighborhood. Then I saw you enter the building. I was far behind you, and I couldn't shout out your name, so I decided to follow you here. I thought I could use this chance to apologize. Again I am sorry, Dada."

" No worries, it's all in the past. And, uhmm...does that mean that you are leaving this place?" Dada questioned as she stared at the skies.

" Yeah, I got promoted a few weeks ago, and my boss recommended that I be transferred to BlueSands but I had to finish some procedures here which lead to the delayed transfer. Jenny has already left with Joey, and I will be joining them tomorrow."

" That's great news. It's been your dream to work there, and now it's finally happening. Am happy for you. And am gonna miss you guys, so make sure to take care of yourselves till we meet again." Checking her wrist watch, Dada opened her arms wide for a hug.

" This is my goodbye hug and send my regards to Jenny and Joey."

Chris wanted to say something when suddenly Dada's phone rang. She excused herself and went to answer the call. The name, " Nolly" was written on the screen.

" Hey." Dada responded in a low voice immediately after picking up.

" When will you make an attempt to call me? Have you realised that am always checking on you but you never do so unless I call you first. I failed to see you yesterday and you didn't even call to check if I arrived home safely." Nolly chided her.

" Didn't you call me yester-night? That was enough for the day. You know very well that I hate phone calls. I will try to call you at least twice in a week." Dada answered truthfully. To her, phone calls were more like a taboo.

" You are joking, right? Since you detest phone calls then why didn't you send me a text. Anyway, I have already left the country, and will only be back next month. Find some time to treat me to a nice meal when I come back." Nolly spoke from the other side of the phone.

" Alright, alright. I will surely treat you to a nice hot meal when you get here... Yep... Okay, love you too... Bye." Dada immediately hung up after the conversation.

She relaxed and forgot that she wasn't alone and started humming to JJ Lin's "Twilight". She got frightened when she turned around to find Chris standing behind her.

" What are you still doing here? I thought you have already left by now." She asked in a puzzled tone.

" Waiting for my hug, and I couldn't just leave like am a ghost. At least I have to notify you that am leaving."

" Hahaha, that's very true." She opened her arms once again and hugged him.

"Now go and get done with your work, I still have something later on. See ya." Dada waved her hands freely in the air. Her wavy hair swayed from side to side as the wind blew.

*****

In a three bedroomed double storey house, a man wearing a maroon t-shirt and black boxer-briefs sat half naked on top of the bed. His visible bronze thighs appeared firm and well defined. The light brown hairs resting on his forehead covered his eyebrows revealing a pair of enchanting eyes.

" What has that got to do with me? How, and who she spends her life with is none of my concern. I have been tolerating her behaviour because I thought that she was still depressed after what happened to Seth. I gave in to her every demand, Louis."

" But still you have to consider her feelings and everything that happened between the two of you in the past. I mean you loved each other and am sure you still love her."

Louis leaned on the bedroom door as he voiced out his words. He appeared tall in his navy blue suit. His looks were more like Atlas's, with the only major difference being their eyes and body build.
