The Brown Rose

" What if I say I want to know you more, would you allow me?" His playful expression became a bit serious then playful again. " What do you mean by that? Why should you know me more?" Confusion was evident on her face. " I meant exactly that. I want to know you better, know more than your name, how does that sound?" He asked and looked down at her from above. " There is nothing to know about me. Am just a simple girl with a boring life, well that is what most of my friends tells me. Am anti-social so yeah, absolutely nothing exciting about my life." She looked up and met his focused gaze. ***** A short story of two individuals, ......... introducing: * Isis Dada Dester; a young radio presenter. Help me, please

Just then one of the women spoke,

" I heard from the radio last night that there will be a storm in a few days. This could be the cause of these strong winds."

" Hehe, you surely are up to date with current news. It's unfortunate as there was no TV network at my place yesterday." Said one female customer while paying for her grocery at the till.

" Nowadays it is good to be up to date with the world news, and remember to send my regards to Mr Chase. Also don't forget about my parcel, I will ask one of the children to fetch it for me later on."

" Will do so." As she said that, the female customer picked up her shopping bags and vacated the shop.

" These clouds are suspicious, it might start to rain soon." She mumbled in a low voice as she picked up her pace.

She had just taken refuge under the bus stop shade when a car stopped near and a young lady dressed in a medi- dress walked over to her in slow, unhurried steps. Her baby blue coloured dress made her appear much gentler as it flew to and fro due to the winds. As she got closer, her sweat- covered face became visible.

" Good morning auntie, I got lost while searching for the town's clinic." The young lady's voice entered into the woman's ears making her smile.

" You got lost while searching for the clinic? You must be new here and very tired, come sit and have some water." The elderly woman asked while patting the space next to her.

" Thank you for the water." The young woman gave a reply before she struggled to sit comfortably on the wooden bench under the shade.

The elderly lady passed her the ice cold water bottle of which Dada finished in a few big gulps.

" Well, the clinic is a few meters away from where I stay so if you don't mind, I could show you the way, how does that sound?"

" Thanks once again."

They sat for a couple of minutes before they boarded Dada's car leaving behind the bustling market Square. The scenery outside was beautiful as the large trees swayed. The small shrubs added a natural green element of nature to the town.

A small smile appeared on Dada's face.

" First time here?" The elderly woman asked in an amused voice.

The question made Dada smile in embarrassment.

" Yes."

The journey wasn't that long as they soon arrived at the other side of the town which was about four- hundred meters away from the shopping market.

" Thank you once again for the help."

The two ladies bade each other goodbye as they each went their separate ways.

The clinic wasn't that far away. But by the time Dada arrived at the clinic gates, her body was sweating as if she got soaked in a bucket of water. Her walking was a bit laboured.

" Morning Sir, where is the consultation room?"

Her voice came in the form of a whisper. The security personnel scrutinized her face after seeing her pained look. He stretched forth his hand as he pointed out while giving her the directions.

" Thanks." Without wasting much time, Dada drove to one of buildings opposite the security room.

" She is in pain. I could clearly detect that from her voice and face." Another security personnel said to her colleague after Dada drove away.

After a few more turns, there before her was a sign hanging written ' Consultant room 1' in big black bold letters. As it was the weekend, there weren't many people and in no time, it was finally her turn.

*****

Inside the consultation room, the scent of lavender mixed with a faint smell of disinfectant filled the air. On the doctor's seat, a young man with a pen in his right hand sat gracefully as he typed away on his desktop.

'Knock knock'

The sounds of knocks disrupted him and he looked up expecting to see one of the nurse's head popping through the small opening of the door.

His eyes twitched when he saw a slightly average height woman in a blue dress entering the room. He furrowed his brows as he noticed her not so good facial expressions. Wasting no time at all, he gestured for her to sit down while his eyes studied her intently.

" Can you hurriedly help me, am about to die." Dada's voice by now sounded much pained as she half- sat and half-stood.

" Yes ma'am, I will help you but could you please sit down first so I get to understand your problem before helping you." The young man walked to the water dispenser as he filled a disposable cup with cold water for her before coming to take his seat.

" I don't think am able to sit down at this moment, just prepare an injection please. Am in so much pain that I can't sit down properly on any surface. I had to force myself to drive here." Dada spoke while straightening up and pointed at her rear end.

" Then I guess you should lie down." The young doctor gestured for her to walk to the bed mounted on one corner of the room.

As it was a bit higher, Dada found it harder to climb on. She let out a muffled painful groan at her futile attempt.

" Let me help you with that." The young man stood behind her and lifted her up gently before placing her on the clinic bed with her face down. He went back to his chair after assisting her.

He looked over at the woman on the bed before asking, " So what's the problem that brought you here?" His brown eyes focused on her heart shaped face for a second before staring back to his desktop once again.
