Chapter 10

I heard rushed footsteps coming towards the door of my room and in the twinkling of an eye, different doctors and nurses walked into my room, in a single file. All of the doctors wore white coats over their blue scrubs and they had their stethoscopes with them while the nurses only wore light blue scrubs.

Apparently, the Doctor who came to check me was the renowned Doctor Matthew Kent; the Chief Medical Director and the Head of all the other doctors in the Hospital. Little wonder why they all came in their numbers immediately he called.

He was also the most skilled surgeon in the hospital and mostly attended to patients in the VIP rooms. It was like he was created just for the main purpose of being a surgeon because he didn't have to stress too much, all he had to do was check the patients' files, check the patients' symptoms and give a diagnosis and after various tests were carried out on such patients, he was always correct and the others felt he was too proud. This made him also get the nickname "Proud Genius". This was the main reason he was working in the Hospital, that was the only hospital which could afford to pay him in the country.

I looked at them, one after another but as much as I tried, I was not able to figure out what their expressions meant. They also spoke in hushed tones, making it difficult to hear them.

My parents stood by the side in the room and as they stood there, I could see impatience brewing in their eyes. They wanted to know what was going on, not because they really cared but because they didn't want me to ruin their perfectly laid out plan.

"Doctor, what is going on?" I heard my mother ask the doctor, while my father held onto her hand because the actress in her was going to come to life soon enough.

"Nothing to worry about, ma'am." He responded and immediately got back to checking my files.

"Is she okay? I won't be at peace if anything happens to my precious daughter. Oh no." My mother said while feigning tears which soon turned into a loud wail.

The actress in her had now come to life completely because I knew for a fact, that those tears were entirely fake.

Immediately, the Head Doctor ordered for my parents to be escorted out of the room so as to allow them to focus on me without distraction and intruders.

With his hands in his white coat and his stethoscope in one of the front pockets, He began questioning the doctors one after another immediately after my parents had left the room.

"Dr Ken, what do you think?" He asked and before getting a response he asked the next doctor.

"Dr Katie, do you have anything to say?" He asked the only female First-year resident doctor.

"No sir, I don't." She responded immediately, with her head bowed.

"What do you mean you don't have anything to say? That you are a first -year resident doctor doesn't mean you should not have anything to say. Weren't you taught anything in medical school?" He asked angrily but quietly.

He now shifted his focus from her to another Doctor.

"Dr Tyler, what are your thoughts on this?"

"I think we need to know who attended to the patient in the first place sir."

"And why is that?" He questioned him further.

"We need to know if any odd medication was administered to her and maybe the reaction is what's causing this sir." He responded smartly.

"Good." Dr Matthew said and continued. "So who was initially in charge here?" He asked and everyone went quiet except Dr Ken who raised his hand.

"I, sir." I was the one in charge." He quickly said.

"So, was any strange medication administered?" Dr Matthew asked him.

"No sir, immediately she was rushed here, I examined her myself and after the tests I carried out, I noticed she collapsed due to immense stress." He explained.

"Infact, I only assigned a few nurses I was able to vouch for because of how important she is and to avoid any errors." He further explained.

"I'd suggest that we should carry out a blood test on her so as to ascertain what exactly went wrong." He said, on a final note.

"I agree with that sir, seeing as she went from zero to a hundred real quick, we need to carry out a test real quick because we don't know if there's any underlying issue." Dr Tyler added.

"Okay, Dr Ken and Dr Tyler, you both will be in charge of that. Carry out a blood test immediately and i….." He said but was stopped abruptly before he could finish his statement.

"Errrr…. Excuse me sir…" Dr Katie interrupted, raising her hand slightly above her head.

"Yes, Dr Katie? What do you have to say?"

"Sir, I'd suggest we also refer her to a psychologist and most importantly, carry out an electroencephalography. That would all help us in our search for a solution." She said.

"A Brain Test! Exactly! Where has this been since? I've been waiting patiently for someone to say this. Thank you Dr Katie, that's smart of you." He commended her, making her smile.

Getting praises from Dr Matthew Kent is one of the best things that could happen to any Doctor because it rarely happens. Despite being proud, as they say, and being a genius, he never ceases to commend any Doctor who shows commendable efforts at becoming great.

"Get to work, everyone. I need all hands on deck. Nothing must go wrong and no error must tarnish the great career and reputation that I have spent years building." Dr Matthew finalised.

Everyone filed out in the same manner, as orderly as possible while I watched the whole thing play out. I kept wondering what could be going wrong, I really couldn't understand what was going on as much as I tried.

Not long after the doctors left my room, a nurse and one of the doctors came back. The nurse politely asked me to lie down in a comfortable position, with my arm extended and my palm facing up. She cleaned the area of my arm where the blood will be drawn with an antiseptic solution, which will help to reduce the risk of having an infection.

She then applied a tourniquet around the upper part of my arm to aid making the veins more easier to access and more visible. After which she selected a vein at the crook of my elbow and inserted a needle which had been sterilized beforehand into it. I held my breath and closed my eyes as the needle went into my arm.

Once she was sure the needle was in place, she attached a syringe to the other end and blood was drawn through the needle to the syringe. As soon as enough blood had been collected, she removed the tourniquet and as the needle was gently removed from my arm, I flinched in pain and closed my eyes tighter.

"Sorry ma'am." She uttered when she saw that the process had hurt me.

"No, it's fine ma'am." I politely responded.

The nurse then applied some pressure on the punctured site with gauze to stop any form of bleeding from my arm. She finally disposed of the needle and collection equipment in a container and I saw her label the blood sample with my name clearly written as "MRS ANDREA ZAVERI" which she immediately took to the lab for testing before I could utter any word.

I tried to sit up after she left and as I tried, the pain in my shoulder persisted but I paid no attention to it and I stood up anyway and forcefully yanked off the tubes connected to my wrist. It was painful and I was weak but I didn't care, I just wanted it off.

I didn't know what was going on with me but the only thing I understood at that point was the voice in my head and the only thing it was saying to me at that moment was- RUN. I didn't know where to run to but I wanted to run, that was the only thing that could keep me sane.

The voice came again and this time it was louder, piercing through my eardrums, it was like someone was screaming at me at the top of their voice. RUNNNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!
