Chapter 38: The Shifters Fight Over Mating Rights

In the dining room that Stella left behind, Bennett, Dana, Monica and Carlton circled each other. To an outsider, the grimaces on their faces might look like a smile. The prowling of their movements, a ritualistic dance.

But they were not playing. They were readying for a strike. Each one.

The air was charged with plasma. The same as when lightning is about to strike.

The shifters changed form. The wolves always there, just below the surface finally broke free.

“You made a promise to me Bennett, and I expect you to keep it.” Monica’s distorted voice called out. She lunged for Bennett, but Dana caught her by the throat, midair, throwing her to the floor, in one big, furry heap.

“Better check your facts.” Dana spat. “Carlton made that promise. Not Bennett.”

“It was never his to make. He had no right.” Bennett growled, taking a swipe at his father.

Carlton ducked away at the last second, leaving Bennett with nothing to grab but hot air.
