Echoes of the Past

The ethereal glow of Eir's Domain Expansion, Sanctuary of the Eternal Bloom, enveloped Furōkawa in a surreal landscape of luminescent flowers stretching endlessly. The air was thick with a sweet, intoxicating scent that seemed to seep into his very soul.

Eir stood gracefully amidst the blossoms, her serene demeanor contrasting sharply with the intensity of their confrontation. Her silver armor gleamed softly, and her eyes held a curious, almost compassionate gaze.

"Why do you fight with such fervor, Furōkawa?" she inquired, her voice gentle yet probing. "What drives the storm within you?"

Furōkawa tightened his grip on Onamazu, the weight of her question pressing against the walls he'd built around his past. His breath was ragged, not just from the battle, but from the memories clawing their way to the surface.

"Why do you care?" he retorted, though his voice lacked its usual bite. "You're my enemy. This is just a game to you."

Eir shook her head slowly. "Understanding one's adversary is not a game. It's a path to truth. Share your story, and perhaps you'll find the strength you seek."

The field around them seemed to pulse with a gentle rhythm, as if urging him to speak. Furōkawa's gaze drifted to the ground, the vibrant petals blurring as his mind traveled back in time.

"I was born into a family that saw me as a curse," he began, his voice low. "My mother… she believed I brought misfortune. Said I was bad luck. She doted on my younger brother, Aoto, and kept me at arm's length. I didn't understand why."

He paused, the pain of those memories evident in his eyes.

"My father… he loved kayaking, traveled the world. He took me sometimes. He wanted to be close to me, I think. But my mother… she kept him away. It felt like my whole family was avoiding me for reasons I couldn't grasp."

Eir listened intently, her expression softening with empathy.

"To cope, I learned to fend for myself. Spent time with Yuta and Rika when we were kids. They were my escape. But then… my parents had a massive argument. They took my brother and left for the States, leaving me behind. I was sent to live with my sickly grandparents in the countryside. Stopped going to school. Lost touch with Yuta and Rika."

He clenched his fists, the knuckles whitening.

"That's why I never use my last name, Fukitsu. It means 'ominous.' Fitting, isn't it? I plan to change it when I'm of age."

The weight of his words hung in the air, the blossoms around them swaying gently as if in mourning.

Eir stepped closer, her gaze unwavering. "Your past is a heavy burden, Furōkawa. But it doesn't have to define your future."

Before he could respond, she moved with blinding speed, her glaive a silver blur. Furōkawa barely managed to parry, the force of the blow sending him skidding back.

"Focus," Eir admonished, her tone firm. "Your past has made you strong, but your anger blinds you. Show me your true strength."

They clashed repeatedly, Eir's movements fluid and precise, while Furōkawa's were fueled by raw emotion. Despite his determination, he found himself outmatched, each exchange leaving him more battered and exhausted.

Finally, Eir disarmed him, sending Onamazu flying from his grasp. She swept his legs out from under him, and he crashed to the ground, gasping for breath.

Eir knelt beside him, her expression unreadable. "You have potential, but you're held back by your own chains."

She removed her left earring, a delicate piece that shimmered with a soft light, and gently attached it to Furōkawa's left ear.

"This earring will convert your cursed energy into reverse cursed energy, allowing you to heal your wounds. Rise, Furōkawa."

He felt a soothing warmth spread through him, his injuries mending as the earring worked its magic. With renewed strength, he stood, meeting Eir's gaze with a mixture of gratitude and determination.

"To escape this domain," Eir continued, "you must prove yourself as my equal. Take my other earring before exorcising me, and you'll have the power to defeat me, and Gunnr."

She gestured to her right earring, identical to the one he now wore.

"Time flows differently here," she added. "We can battle to our hearts' content, and only moments will pass in the outside world."

Furōkawa's eyes burned with a newfound resolve. "I will fight you, Eir. And I will win."

A genuine smile graced Eir's lips. "That's the spirit. Let us begin."

As they prepared to clash once more, the field of flowers seemed to shimmer with anticipation, bearing silent witness to the unfolding battle.
