"Why did you have to pick this place?" A bratty female voice complains.
A 15 year old boy in sitting in the back seat behind his sister. "I just did, alright? I didn't complain when you chose Miami or Tennessee. And it's not like it's my fault your last pick happened to be one of the shortest ones"
"But why this place? It's in the middle of nowhere!" Gwen, Myrddin's younger sister, continues to complain from the passenger seat.
Myrddin rolls his eyes. "I did it just to bug you sis. That was my goal all along. In fact, that's been my goal for the entirety of my life apparently. I exist just to make you suffer in cruel and unusual ways"
"You don't need to tell me, I'm well aware" Gwen says with no small amount of venom in her tone.
"Myr, Gwen. Play nice, we're almost there" A mature sounding female voice tries to placate them with a somewhat stern tone. This must be the hundredth time she has done it on this road trip to their next home.
Driving the car is the sibling's mom. And she's been driving for quite a large amount of time. She can't wait for Myrddin, her eldest, to get his license so he can chauffeur her around for a change.
For the past while it feels like all they have seen are trees and mountains. Perhaps she shouldn't have chosen the scenic route, trees look like trees after all. While she could have driven through the neighboring town to get to Beacon Hill, she thought her kids would enjoy some more time together. Or they would get bored of fighting and eventually get along for a change. It was a mother's wishful thinking.
Currently, it's only the three of them in the car. Actually, that's almost what it's always been, even in their new homes. Sebastian Wyllt, the father of the family, lives at work. And it just happens that his work is located in London, Europe. He barely manages to find the time to visit on a few holidays each year. But as Myrddin and Gwen grow older, they see less and less of their father.
Gwen crosses her arms and looks out the window as she pouts. "We were 'almost there' half an hour ago…"
"I told you to make sure your phone was charged before we left" Their mom tells Gwen. "Or you should have grabbed a book like Myr"
Gwen stares out the window as trees go by in a blur. "Myr isn't even reading a book. He's just looking at a comic"
Myrddin flicks to the next page as he continues reading. "I finished an actual book around the 60th time you complained about something. And that was about 2 hours ago or so. This is just plan C"
Gwen tilts her head. "What was plan B?"
Myrddin continues reading about a certain league of super heroes. "Plan B was the second book I read and finished a few minutes ago"
"Gah" Gwen scoffs. "You know that looking at the pictures doesn't count as reading"
Myrddin nods. "I agree. And I did read two books. I was able to accomplish this because I don't just look at the pictures and have the reading capabilities of a 2nd grader like a certain someone"
Their mom shakes her head and sighs as she interrupts their agruing. "Why must you two go back and forward at one another like this? What do you two do when I'm not home?"
Gwen looks at her mom from the corner of her eye. "Try to avoid eachother, and when that's not possible we try not to kill eachother"
"That's…" Myrddin flicks to the next page. "… actually rather accurate"
Adhan, their mother who prefers Ada, smiles. "So you two CAN agree on something~"
"It's not like we don't agree on things mom" Gwen states while turning her focus back to the scenery out the window. "I think we both can agree we dislike eachother"
Myrddin pauses and looks at his sister over his comic book. "Wow, so you don't hate me?"
Gwen narrows her eyes. "Don't push it Myrddin"
With that, Myrddin focuses solely on his comic. He was getting tired of this conversation anyway. The two other books he read were pretty heavy philosophically speaking so he enjoys being able to turn his brain off while reading his comics. Even if they somewhat frustrate him at points. In the end, they're just fiction so he doesn't let it bring his mood down.
Gwen extends her left arm to the center console of the car and messes with the radio as she finds a decent station that is playing something to her tastes and isn't just static.
Ada, their mom, knows that her kids have sharp tongues. She just enjoys spending actual time together with her kids. But it's like keeping two cats that don't like each other in an enclosed space and trying to get them to not attack each other. They're already 15 and 13 respectively. And Gwen's birthday is coming up in a few months before the year ends. Where did the time go? She herself is 30, technically most women finish aging at a certain point with their own discretion. It's not like many people will ask her what her official age is anyway. But her actual age is supposedly around 38ish or so.
As the music plays in the car nobody talks. Ada continues to focus on the road and taps her fingers on the steering wheel along to the beat of the song that's playing. Gwen is bored out of her mind, her phone is dead and she's been looking out the window since. Myrddin is using the last bit of sunlight to read his comic. After the sun goes down he has to go to plan D, E, or F. But he shouldn't need to resort to them. Mainly because he should have timed it right. Including Gwen's ridiculous stop requests that either include selfies at various places or snack stops.
After around 12 minutes or so Myrddin finishes his comic book and placed it neatly back inside his bag.
And right on cue:
Gwen spots a sign saying 'Welcome to Beacon Hills'. "Thank God!" She exclaims with relief. She will finally be able to charge her phone and get out of this damned car. She's had too much family bonding for the month already.
Myrddin sits back in his seat and pushes his glasses back into place. Without his glasses he's nearly blind. Gwen messes with him quite often and equally as often calls him Velma. He isn't that tall and also not that muscular. Puberty is taking its time or something with him. And he hopes he ends up looking like his father considering the man ranks in the 'Sexiest Man Alive' magazines. But he's not holding his breath. It's like he got the smarts and his sister got the looks. But he's not complaining, he'd much rather be smart and average looking than handsome and dumb as bricks.
The trees end and the Wyllt family enters the town as the sun finally sets.
It takes them a little longer until they reach their house. But Gwen and Myrddin pay attention to the town. Since they move so often they picked up the habit of looking for interesting places the moment they get into the new town or city. Myrddin looks for different locations than Gwen though. He mainly looks for places he can be alone or places that cater to his hobbies.
But something about this town is different. It's like he already knows where he wants to go. But he brushes that to the side as his great intuition.
"Here we are~" Ada says with excitement and relief upon arriving at their new home.
It's a big two story house that is one of the bigger houses they have lived in. All the houses on the street are also big, but this one seems slightly bigger.
Ada pulls into the driveway and parks the car. "All our things should already be inside waiting to be unpacked"
Before Ada could even finish her sentence Gwen is already standing outside the car and backing up towards the trunk while staring at the house. She hates to admit it, but this may not be so bad. But that's only the house. There is also the fact that they are in a random town which takes points away, but the house makes up for some. But it's not like Myrddin chose the house so she considers him lucky but not off the ropes yet.
Myrddin looks up at a window on the second floor and decides he will try to get that room. "First one inside gets the first pick right?" He confirms with his mom.
"Yep" Ada pops the p as she smirks. "And guess who has the keys?"
"It's you mom. It's always you" Myrddin flatly says. "So let's go before Gwen catches on"
Ada gets out and walks up to the front door with Myrddin following her.
"Wait!"
Both Ada and Myrddin heard Gwen shout. Then they heard footsteps quickly approaching.
Ada unlocked the door and stepped inside. Myrddin tried to quickly get inside but ended up being tackled to the floor by his sister. Ada just watches as Myrddin hits the ground hard. She didn't expect Gwen to just tackle him like that. "Gwendydd Trinity Wyllt!" Ada commands.
Upon hearing her full name Gwen pushes herself up from her brothers back.
Myrddin checks his glasses and tries to get up. "Get off of me you animal"
Gwen pushes on Myrddins back to stand up. "Sorry mom"
Ada folds her arms across her chest. "Don't apologize to me. Apologize to Myr who you just steam rolled. And he still entered the house first so that was pointless of you to do. I suppose you just volunteered to clean the extra rooms for the next week?"
Gwen's eyes go wide. "Wha- every room? For a week? But mom-"
"It could be 2. Now apologize to your brother" Ada doesn't budge.
Myrddin stands up and brushes his hands against his shirt to get whatever was on the floor off of it. It was just a little dirt likely from the people who moved their things in.
Gwen glares at her brother. "Sorry. You were in my way"
Myrddin takes his backpack off his shoulder. "It's not a problem sis. I'm sure my spine will return to normal in due time"
Gwen puts her hands on her hips. "It's from all your slouching and those books you carry around. Not. My. Fault"
Myrddin gives his mom a thumbs up. "I'm fine. Gonna go claim my room" He know the master bedroom is already claimed by his mom.
Ada was going to ask if he was alright, but Myrddin cut her off before she could ask. She then looked at Gwen and they began going back and forward. It was mostly Ada telling her daughter to take it easy on Myr and some other mother daughter things.
Knowing that there were so many rooms in the house, Myrddin goes up the stairs and to the second floor. He remembers the room he chose and goes straight there. But he also takes a peek into each room on the way there.
The room he first picked, and the room that seemed the best, was the corner room. It had 3 windows and was close to the bathroom but not next to it. And it also had a giant bookshelf for his books.
He walked in and set his backpack on the desk and lays on the bed face down. His back throbs as it finally relaxes. He did have two thick hard cover books and his spaz of a sister crush his spine. But it wasn't unbearable. Definitely gonna be a bad bruise.
It's Saturday night now and Monday will be the first day of highschool. He wishes he could have spent the summer getting to know this town, but he was dragged to Gwen's choice places since they were both short. He did choose a place after the last school year ended. But it lasted a month and a week. Then Gwen chose and they were both short. And so now they are here in California, just before the school year starts.
After a while he gets off the bed to go and find his things to start unpacking. Thankfully they turned out to be on the second floor. He did not want to have to carry all his things up the stairs. Not only would he get tired, but he was unsure if he would even have been able to make it up the stairs with a few of the boxes being so heavy.
Gwen did see him begin to move his things to the corner room, so she ended up choosing a room on the second floor but across the house basically.
Not that Myrddin was complaining. He was glad that he didn't have to hear her blasting One Direction, the Jonas Brothers, or Big Time Rush. He didn't mind their music, but he didn't want it overpowering his thoughts while he tried to read, study, game, or sleep. And only a few of their songs were good anyway.
Unpacking took a while. He got his bed and desk set up for the night. Tomorrow would be getting his clothes and books unpacked along with going out to explore the town.
*Knock* *Knock* *Knock* *Creak~*
Ada opens Myrddin's door after knocking. "Just checking in on things here. How are you doing? And how is it? I figured you'd want this room"
Myrddin is siting at his desk with a textbook and notebook opened up. He looks over at his mom and sets his pencil down. "I'm doing alright. But I probably won't be doing any marathons any time soon. And this room is great" Hes used to his mom walking into his room randomly. He's honestly a bit surprised she actually knocked this time.
Ada warmly smiles. "Glad to hear you aren't permanently damaged from Gwen's tackle. I swear, she has way too much energy sometimes… Anyway, I'm lacking a night snack. Anything you want?"
"Not really. I'm still full from dinner, thank you though" Myrddin flexes his hand that was slightly cramping from taking notes.
"Do you want a tour? I already showed Gwen around while you were unpacking. You HAVE to see the kitchen in this place. Cmon Myr" Ada exaggerates.
Myrddin can't say no to his mom. He knows how hard she works and he knows dealing with himself and his sister isn't easy. He doesn't want to make things harder on her. "I don't even know what we're going to do with all this space with only the 3 of us living here"
Ada frowns slights and flicks Myrddin lightly on the forehead. "The FOUR of us thank you very much. Your father technically lives here too you know" She playfully pouts.
"Right, my bad" Myrddin rubs his forehead. The flick was more to surprise than to hurt so it wasn't that bad. "So which rooms first?"
Ada's smile reappears like it had never disappeared. "Let's go back to the front door to start!"
Myrddin spends the next 30 minutes going through the giant house. There are two floors, an attic, and a basement. The Garage isn't small either. The tv in the living room is huge and the couches are big and comfy and there are recliners for the 3 of them. The dining table is a bit too large for them, but if they host a dinner there's plenty of room. This place is like a scaled down mansion.
After the tour Ada and Myrddin end in the living room. They both fall back into a reclining chair and Ada turns the tv on and begins going through the channels.
Myrddin pulls out his phone and goes to his contacts. "So did you design this place?"
Ada nods with her attention on the tv. "Yeah, but it was a long time ago. But not too long ago!"
Myrddin smiles. At least he gets along with his mom. If he didn't, he'd probably end up going crazy. Maybe even as crazy as Gwen.
But then suddenly his smiles fades away. Myrddin turns to look at his mom. "Wait, how?"
"How?" Ada stops on a decent movie about a man of iron. "It was actually pretty easy. I did have to work with another person since I was just starting out but he let me take the lead in designing the place"
Myrddin shakes his head. He knows his mom is an architect, and a damn great one at that, but that's not what he meant. "No, mom. I meant how did one of your designs end up here in Beacon Hills? I randomly chose this place and we haven't lived in one of your houses before"
Ada shrugs. "It's just luck I guess. I was actually really happy you chose Beacon Hills because of this reason. Gwen was just as surprised as you were when I told her, but your reaction is much better. But it's not true that we haven't lived in one of the houses I designed before. You were probably just too young to remember"
Myrddin furrows his eyebrows. "Huh… weird"
"Weird doesn't mean bad. It just means something is unique and interesting" Ada says.
Myrddin begins deleting the numbers from his phone. "Hopefully we can stay here for longer then"
He usually clears his contacts after moving. It's not like he's blocking the numbers, just deleting their contacts. It's not like they will text or call him in the future anyway. None of them ever do. And he wasn't really able to make friends over the summer so now there are only a couple numbers in his phone. His mom, dad, sister, and some other relatives or random numbers he keeps. If anyone wanted to text him they could… but nobody ever did.
