Chapter 16

An embarrassing rumble from Nathan’s stomach created a much needed lighter moment.

Dinner was simple but tasty—a spicy stew served with mashed potato and peas. Beth-Ann sent Walter up to the serving table, but Karl and Nathan insisted they get their own. Poor Walter had been already put upon too much for their liking.

“She certainly has you trained well,” said Nathan playfully as they waited in line with their plates.

Walter shifted uncomfortably on the spot. “She can’t get around as much as she used to,” he replied humbly and Nathan felt ashamed for having said anything at all.

After Nathan had eaten everything bar the enamel on the tin dish, he patted his stomach contentedly. “That was delicious. Better than I would have had if I’d been at home cooking for myself.”

“Frankly, darl, you earn it,” said Beth-Ann. “You haven’t yet, but you will.”

Karl stood up. “Time I got to bed. Going to be a long day tomorrow, with the show and all.”
