The ritual said he had to use another person's remains i.e. flesh and blood as a sacrifice, one of his ancestor's ashes as a spiritual sacrifice the water from the holy river of Ganga which in Hindu mythology is said to be the river which cleanses the soul and a living sacrifice it could be any sentient living thing but the catch was that the soul of the living thing will act as a cover so that the person who wishes for Astral travel it will act as a protective barrier from the corrosive void energy now you cannot use a human who has lived for 10 years to cover the soul of a human who has lived for 21 years because as you grow older your soul also grows and as you consume more and more knowledge your soul is tempered and starts to expand if he didn't want to kill a living person all he could do was to trap the soul of a dying person i.e. basically remove his soul from his body before he actually dies. He visits a nearest cancer cure centre and identifies his target. He spends a few days with an old man in his 60s diagnosed with mouth cancer the cancer tissues have already invaded his brain cells so he doesn't have much time left before he dies.The ritual takes place after our MC performing a strange ruitual essentially trapping the old man's soul in his body and now it was no turning back because if he doesn't perform the ritual in a few days the old man's soul will get corrupted and he will turn into a ghoul.
