Stone in the shoe

When you were a kid, you lived with your grandmother in the small town of Silvertree, on the edge of a magical forest. Grandma is a witch, and she taught you how to use your magic to affect the natural world, too. “Magic is a part of you,” she always told you. “Learning how to use it means figuring out who you are.” Now you’re 19 and on your own. After years of living in the forest while you perfected your witchcraft, you’ve returned to take care of your grandmother’s house and crow-familiar while she’s gone. Figuring out who you are feels more important than ever - not to mention, figuring out what Silvertree is. A lot is just as you remembered: the friendly generous next-door neighbors with a kid just your age, the proud town council, the quaint little shops with quirky punny names, the gentle shadowy forest full of magic.

She dives beneath the stand and comes up holding one of her own shoes. The children gaze on, suddenly enraptured, as the magician sticks a hand into the shoe and digs around inside it until—

"Hey presto!" she cries, before pulling a single card out of her shoe. She takes a moment to smile at the children before calmly saying: "Is this your card?"

She flips it around to reveal the king of diamonds.

It takes a while for the kids to recover from their excitement, and as they finally start to disperse with their parents, you hear the little girl practically begging her dad to let her learn magic. You watch as the magician expertly reshuffles the cards before putting them to one side. Then, once she's sure all the kids have gone, she stretches her arms and pulls off her mask—revealing herself as Nic, the assistant you met at the pet store. You were pretty sure it was her, of course; there aren't too many people with silver hair around.

Looking your way, she waves.

"Hey—how's it going?" she says with a casual smile. "How'd you like the show?"
