Chapter 4
"AUTHOR's POV
"He's not that bad" Victoria thinks to herself as she empties the plate with pie.
She had followed him all the way downstairs and pestered him till he let her have it. Victoria microwaved the pie then ate from it.
"You make the best pie. Mehn.." she says to him after dropping the plate in the sink.
"I'm just glad you actually came." She smiled sweetly at him.
"You are?" He looks at Victoria like She has grown two heads.
She chuckles, "Surprise I can be calm?"
"Okay- at what point am I going to freak out? What did you drink after eating the pie?" He questioned and They both laughed.
"Was I that mean? " She questions after a moment.
"You have no idea… But it's calm." came his swift reply.
"But really though, I sincerely apologize for the way I spoke to you.I just got upset."
She stared at him for a while, as different thoughts started playing out in her head . This could be her only chance to befriend someone. She wonders if her mom is aware of Mary sending someone to her place.
Either way, her mom would be pleased to hear that she's chatting with someone. She wonders if she would be pleased to know that the 'someone' is a guy though.
"I" he started to say
"Can I know your name now?" Victoria asks
"Ace. Ace Walker." He introduced
"So, should I bring a duvet or something for you? I mean the cold and .. "
"Ohh ... I'm n - not sleeping over. That's inappropriate and I wouldn't want to inconvenience you… like having a guy over and all that. I'll just lodge somewhere close, if my mother ends up not showing tonight. Besides, I have a company to run."
She mouths an "o" before nodding her head and muttering "No qualms"
"Netflix?" Victoria offered.
"Not right now .. in as much as this sounds embarrassing, and I hate to say this out loud, I have a favorite series on Nickelodeon.. and they're releasing the last episode tonight "
"Nickelodeon?" she questions " Sure I watch Nickelodeon .. SpongeBob square pants ... "She sings but He gave Victoria a weird face that says .. don't do that'
"Why don't we just watch .. " he lets out
" Sure, I can do that. Drinks? "
"Yogurt?"
" Apple flavor?"
" Nah .. just yogurt ."
Victoria stands up from the couch, and walks over to the fridge, she opens it and grabs a yogurt can and ice cream from it and heads back to the couch.
"It hasn't started yet." He informs
"Ohh okay." Victoria, place the can of yogurt on the small table, and a glass cup with it. She settles down next to him, already scooping her ice cream. He kept switching from channels to channels.
"..... you are advised to stay home and close your windows.."
Toria looked up at the television. a female newscaster was forecasting the days' news.
" She looks pretty," Victoria murmured.
Ace switched to another channel.
"Hey could you put that back?"
"Uhm sure.. but the movie is starting in 30 seconds."
Victoria mounts an 'O' before settling comfortably into the couch.
"You can tune on Nickelodeon then.. I just wanted to look at her face."
He giggled and She smiled at that.
A few minutes after the program started, the show was interrupted by a newscaster.
" We apologize for interrupting this show . A new virus has been detected in New York and it has spread to Nigeria and other countries . Sources say ... it is fast spreading to other states Signs of this virus; You start vomiting blood from every inch in your body leading to death. But it doesn't just end there.. It turns to something else. Biting anyone close to it thereby transferring the virus. Our source has no name for it. You are advice to stay home and store your ..."
The power went off.
"Wtf!!!" Ace said loudly before he stood up.
Victoria stands with him. He abruptly grabs his phone. He was charging with Victoria's cord.
"Fuck! Fuk!! No battery entered" We need to get out of here right now. "
"What Didn't you hear the news?! It's not safe! And it's not like the virus is here in our town already." Victoria said, obviously not buying the idea.
"Well I can't just sit and do nothing!" He screamed in her face.
Victoria felt her eyes burn.
'No, no no You're not going to cry. Suck it up She tells herself
"If it's true that there is an apocalypse, you shouldn't be running." Victoria informs.
" How the fuuk would you know that? You've not even seen one yet." The memory of Mary and some old folks she encountered flashed across her mind.
A horrid expression came to sit on her face.
"fuck! I almost got killed." She murmured to herself.
She looks up at Ace in pity. He's desperately still trying to get his phone to work so he can get across to his mother.
'Should I tell him what I had seen?' She quickly dismissed the thought.
Knowing he would leave her and run out thereby putting his life at risk.
Just then they both heard a loud scream. They rushed to the window. A pregnant lady probably due to deliver was in labor and was walking outside in the estate. "We need to help her." Victoria interjects
"We? Listen, we stay in the house and do nothing. Okay?"
"No. I know her! She's a very nice lady and it appears she's in labor! " Ace ruffles his hair in annoyance.
"Maybe we can call someone or something ? ... maybe her husband .... look ! Someone is coming to help so you can calm down." He lets out obviously frustrated.
Victoria looks out the window to be sure of what he's saying before backing out.
'That's, Phillip. Philip and miss Anita (that's her name) don't do well. Miss Anita happens to be the only lady that Victoria likes in the estate. They don't talk much but whenever she sneaks out, she'd always exchange pleasantries with Victoria. Even when At first. she initially had snubbed her, she continued nevertheless. At some point, Victoria just had to give in.
Phillip on the other hand, is a single dad and a pervert. He has been trying several times to get Miss Anita, on his bed. A pregnant lady at that! Victoria had walked past them several times exchanging words. But they stopped talking, when Mr. Phillip started spreading news in the estate that he had screwed Miss Anita.'
Maybe he wants to help her get to a hospital Victoria soliloquies as she stares at Phillip intently.
"Something is wrong." She tells Ace.
" What is?"
"Something is wrong .." she says again before pointing at the window. Ace follows her hand.
" He's walking pretty pretty slow .. with his neck bent towards her. That's not how he walks.
"Maybe he's drunk or something..." Ace reasoned.
"Well a drunk man can't take a pregnant lady to a hospital." Victoria argued.
They get interrupted by the loud screams of Miss Anita. Phillip had grabbed hold of her hand and had started biting on her arms.
Victoria and Ace stand in horror. A little girl had started walking towards them.
"Hey.. hey..." Victoria calls over to Ace.
" That's .. Philip's daughter .. we've got to save her "
"She can't be saved." he says bluntly
" Whal ..? "
" Look .. she has blood dripping from her ears . She must have bitten her dad." Victoria squints her eyes across the scene as she watches the little girl.
She settles on Miss Anita tummy and bites in
"Oh God!" Ace says as he covers the curtain.
"What do we do?" Victoria asks him
"I don't know. how come you aren't scared from that shit you just saw?"
"I watch horror documentaries."
He mouths an "o" . They walk over to the couch and sit down
"You have enough food, yea?" He asks
"Yes. But we need to get more." Victoria suggested
"Are you out of your mind? Go out while this is going on? What if we get bitten?"
"That's slightly impossible .. unless we don't watch our back . Blood is very essential . The blood drained while vomiting or drained from sucking one ... will make the body less effective But stronger sight of food"
"I guess that would make sense if you're one of them. But you're not, so we can go back to trying to be safe.. and we don't know how many they are out there."
"So what do we do?" she questioned but she didn't wait for his response before continuing.
"We need to get arms. But we still need to go out and get more food. " She suggested not minding his aggressive tone. She was too relaxed for Ace's liking.
"You've got knives?"
"Tons."
" Who are you ?" Ace asks with a sickening gaze
" Someone you can trust. "
