Chapter 78

Colby settled more into pillows and closed those eyes.

“No!”

That got open eyes, but no words.

“No—oh God—” He lunged forward. Dove for Colby’s hand. Saw Colby’s tiny, almost infinitesimal, flinch at an unanticipated lurch in his direction. Colby, who was hurting and wounded already, in a hospital bed—

“Oh, fuck—” He yanked both hands away. Behind his back. Out of sight of his cracking heart. “No, no, I didn’t—I don’t—I didn’t mean—”

“I know. I know you didn’t. It’s only—it’s not you. You’re wonderful, Jason, don’t think it’s you—”

“Jesus—Colby—” Metaphorically on both knees. He’d get down there literally if it’d help. He bent forward. Rested both hands flat on the side of the bed. Took a shuddering breath.

He wanted to hit something. Someone. Two someones. A lot.

He couldn’t. No punching or kicking or shouting would solve this.
