Chapter 7

He seemed so genuine. Standing there comforting me, trying to make sense of the horrible murderous past of my people. His touch slowly ran down my shoulders to my hands. “We have each other.” He smiled. I nodded. And I believed him. We were in this together now. The history we discovered in that trunk was never meant to be learned, and he was right there was danger in that. I couldn’t take my eyes off him. What was it, that drew me in so much? That made me feel so comfortable. This was far more than just a companion bond. Was something happening between us? No. Nothing ever could. But still, it felt as though it was. We stared at each other our bodies growing closer. Was this it? Was this the moment I had been daydreaming about since the bonding ceremony? Was he going to kiss me?

He smelled like eucalyptus and cedar. Every time I inhaled, I felt like I was breathing in a fresh breath of forest air. His face tilted toward mine as if examining me. I wondered what he saw.
