My father and I arrived at the stables, and even before we stepped inside, I could tell this place had seen more battles than some of our warriors. The outer walls, made of stone and wood, were weathered by years of exposure to the elements, the cracks filled with creeping vines as if nature was trying to claim it. The roof slanted steeply, dark tiles gleaming under the sun like the polished scales of a snake. The air smelled thick with hay, sweat, and the musk of the steeds housed within. In the distance, I could see them—horses grazing, their sleek coats shimmering in the daylight, their tails flicking lazily as they enjoyed the calm.
