Severed Fate

A heroic villainess, Corlissa Veronique is an anomaly herself, such a paradox is the best description of her existence. A pitiful soul forever chained to the bindings of the Villainess, she was a bug in the system, a glitch in society, a defect in the world. Memories of past lives, her own life played on repeat, that was the curse of the Villainess. Emotions never left her, she felt the suffocation of betrayal time and time again, the burning of hate, the drowning of despair, the delightful yet excruciating taste of love. Each time they turned their backs to her she felt the same emotions each and every time. It was as if she was just a marionette, obeying commands against her will as if her free-flowing string of fate that connected to her 'happily ever after' was trapped tightly in the grip of other people's hands, stretching and fraying it however they wished. She vowed to, without fail, fulfil the wishes of the previous villainess who had left the world with unmistakable anguish...and sympathy. Such empathy... "You are a person, no matter what you look like or what you do, unless you prove me otherwise I will continue to view you as who you are." Such compassion... "I wish you didn't have to suffer, I wish you could've been born into a better world." Such understanding... "Let me handle the rest, take a comfortable rest." Such selflessness... "I won't let you suffer anymore..." She truly was such an exemplary hero. --- The cover art is not mine, I found it on Google. ^^

The bright pure stars illuminated the night sky and a full moon graced their presence yet again, each night there has always been a full moon. Without fail, every day the same moon greeted them day after day.

Corlissa, who had supposedly been asleep as it was her bedtime, rose from her slumber. Clad in a full black outfit, a straw hat and a black mask, Corlissa stood upon the highest point of the kingdom, before she vanished into the dead of the night alongside a gust of leaves. She hopped through the trees and made her way to the ‘edge’ of the world.

There was no possible way to travel the entire world’s length within one night, instead, she was looking to prove her theory correct. As expected, with the wisdom of her past lives, what she had theorised truly did come to life. Although the scenery of the world looked like it stretched on and on beyond what the eye could see, there was a magic barrier separating the Capital of the Merillis Kingdom with the other countries and towns.

The barrier was less of a protective barrier and more of a compact dimension, making the travel between the 2 locations appear to be longer than it actually is and also using less land to fit an entire kingdom into. Though that was enough investigation for the day so Corlissa returned home contemplating and piecing together the parts of the puzzle she already has. She kept on thinking back to the night where an unknown suspicious man paid a visit to her room and attempted to brainwash her into the ‘character’ she was meant to be.

Why they had not paid a visit to her again was beyond her, if the brainwashing didn’t work then wouldn’t it be easier to silence her and then replace her with a different girl?

Despite such frightening thoughts plaguing her mind as she fell asleep she had a peaceful good night’s rest. The next day would certainly be draining.

After she woke up, she got dressed by her maids, consumed breakfast while her father was fawning over her and was then escorted to the Amiere Academy to attempt the entrance tests.

An old woman proceeded to the stage in the hall where all the applicants for the next year were seated.

“I am the headmistress of this prestigious academy, Vendiota Invectius. On the behalf of the current students and teachers, I wish you all good luck for the tests and hope that you will pass the tests. That is all from me, I will now hand over to the adjudicator for this year's entrance exams.”

“I will be the teacher who will advise and administer this year’s tests, these tests are not meant to be easy. Should you not make it into this academy, do not let that hinder your growth, these tests are certainly lightyears more difficult than other academies’ tests,” announced a purple-haired female teacher.

“First, you will all be divided into different groups depending on your magic attribute,” the applicants were then all sorted into groups where people of similar attributes or similar tiered attributes would be together. Corlissa wouldn’t necessarily fit into any of the categories, due to the remarkable difference in attributes, so she was placed into the same group as Evie Luxiere who held the holy light magic.

Within that group also included Amy Vontaine, named a genius of this generation due to her excellent capabilities in magic swordsmanship. Her magic attribute electricity, greatly aided her in swordplay since magic swordsmanship involves circulating one’s mana into the sword itself allowing the sword to deal more damage. Metal conducts electricity and swords are made of metal, thus using the sword allowed her to amplify the capabilities of her magic.

“First we will test your power and how much mana you can draw out, you will each take turns in your groups each monitored by either teachers or senior students and try to break an obsidian slab. The more damage you deal, the higher your score will be,” explained the adjudicator. After the brief overview of the test, each of the groups made their way to their own stack of blocks while their results would be recorded by the monitors.

Corlissa’s groups included all the students who had rare or higher-tiered magic attributes and thus, all their abilities were relatively higher than the average student, although there were a few applicants who attained rare attributes but were unable to provide enough mana for them to use it to its full potential. Yet again, Evie went before Corlissa, though in her past lives, or rather the original storyline, Corlissa only made it into the same groups as Evie because the Duchess threatened the adjudicator and monitors.

This time, instead of Evie raising the bar for Corlissa’s less than mediocre performance, Evie served as an appetiser to Corlissa’s abilities. The average of their group so far broke half a rock, Evie who barely made a scratch was not condemned in the slightest because apparently, it was understandable that the combat power of light magic was low since it was more suited for healing or support. Clearly, the laws of fiction were in play, no one once thought of how the first Grand Mage who also held light magic was a major contributor to the constitution of the empire. Instead of using light magic for the purpose described in the holy texts where the purity of light would heal most injuries, he was more intelligent, he manipulated the properties of light to create a formidable weapon.

Light travels at the speed of light, that much is logical, Evie did not think of utilising such a vital attribute unlike the first Grand Mage who created weapons of light that travelled faster than the eye could register, those weapons were controlled simply by lifting his finger. Corlissa, who had thought of such capabilities even in her past lives, was greatly disappointed with the outcome of Evie’s low intellect.

Next was Corlissa’s turn, though she did not start immediately and rather turned to the adjudicator first.

“Which attribute would you like me to use?” although this question had stunned the monitor, it was even more shocking for those who had not yet learnt of the news that the daughter of Duke Veronique held more than one attribute.

“Um...since it is difficult to break a block I suppose there’s no harm in testing every attribute,” the adjudicator said, clearly underestimating the power of the young 8-year-old.

Similar to the trials she took at the mage tower with the Grand Mage Eliot Demetrius, she began with the most common magic of the attributes she had, water magic.

‘Obsidian, like most other rocks, can be eroded by water. A type of erosion by water includes hydration, where obsidian rock absorbs the water in the atmosphere, increasing the water content of the rock. If I apply this to the slab now, theoretically I can increase the water content of the rock forcefully and then control the water inside the rock to build pressure until it explodes the rock. Unfortunately, there will be some damage and risk factors due to the flying pieces of rock should this succeed. I’m kind of lazy right now though...I’ll just slap a barrier spell around the rock and go all out,’ was what went on in Corlissa’s head.

Thus she did carry out her plan or rather experiment luckily there were no injuries and there proved to be a successful result. Although the only drawback was that there were now accusations saying that the young lady of the Veronique Dukedom was a monster in an attempt to slander Corlissa’s reputation, those with a sound mind and look at a situation with a clear head without bias were not swayed by such meaningless rumours.

Next was wind magic, she simply pressurised the air that she could control and shot it at the new slab of obsidian, which, like prior, crumbled pitifully in the face of Corlissa’s unscaled talent. The administrators of the test had finally learnt their lesson and added another 3 obsidian slabs to the row so that they could better gauge her power.

After wind would be dark magic, it was quite simple this time, though the barrier she created did need to be stronger. The raw destructive power of launching an arrow created with dark magic was enough to break the 4 obsidian slabs and the pillar behind it which was aiding the main pillars of the building to hold the roof up. Fortunately, that was quickly patched up by the teachers who utilised their different attributes to recreate the fallen pillar.

Finally, there was world magic. The ultimate magic that held everything in the universe, arguably the strongest magic to exist in the history of the world. Unfortunately, Corlissa had spent more mana on the barriers than the magic she was using to actually break the slabs of obsidian, using world magic she merely formed a mini star, yet the pressure was enough to break the now, 6 total obsidian slabs and form a crater in the floor. The pitiful teachers who were renowned for their expertise, teaching at the prestigious Amiere Academy only to be reduced to construction workers, Corlissa Veronique is truly frightening.
