Second Chance on Life

Four years ago I had lost everything, I lost the reason why I lived and the one that made me happy. But what happens at the moment that that reason why you lived and made you happy from time immemorial appears again in your life without expecting it? I stayed in shock and without understanding anything, because for me that reason no longer existed until I found it four years later.

25. Don't worry, everything will be fine

SANTI'S POV

It's eight in the afternoon and luckily for me, I finished the work I had to do. The girl had potential, but I had the feeling something is weird, and I told the bosses that, but they decided to hire her anyway, so I would have to work with her on her new album.

At least, the day was over and I could go home to see Jessica, so I quickly go to the car when I get a call I wasn't going to answer unless I saw it's Carla calling. "I'm going home now, don't worry." I said before she could say anything else, "I'm not worried, I just want you to come home." Our best friend said calmly, "I told you I'm going." I protested, "Not to the house Jessica is staying in but to the one you shared." She responded and I couldn't help but frown "What do you need now Carla to be there? I want to go with Jessica."

"Well, that's why I need you to see something." My best friend insisted, "It better be important." I said seriously. The only thing I wanted to do right now was be with Jess. "You'll see when you get here." She informed and hung up without letting me say anything else.

I got in the car and drove home to see what the hell Carla wanted right now. She should know better than anyone the only thing I want to do right now is spend time with Jessica, but no, she has to call me to see whatever I have to see in the house.

When I got to the house, I parked at the entrance and took the key to get in, but if Carla is inside, it must have been unlocked. "Carla, I'm already here, what the hell do I have to see?" I asked, annoyed with her "Come upstairs." She asked.

I cursed under my breath because she's wasting my time, but as soon as I get upstairs, I see Carla, Miky and Madison at the door of our studio, which makes me wonder where she's if the kids are here. "Where's Jessica?" I asked, frowning. "You come closer and stop protesting so much."

I approached and as soon as I reached the door, I see Jessica with a pile of papers around her looking at them carefully. Why had Carla brought her home? And what's Jessica doing looking at those papers with so much interest?

"She has been sitting there for hours looking at all those papers. We called her to come to eat something, but she didn't answer us. What's more, she doesn't know anything about what's going on around her." Carla informed me and I stared at my girlfriend. "And why didn't you get closer to her?" I asked trying to understand "To Jessica? When is she so focused on something? I'm not going to do it; you know how she gets."

"That could have changed." I defended my girlfriend "No, it hasn't changed. She gets mas when someone bother her." Miky assured, "And this is where I come in, right?" I asked even though I already knew the answer "Exactly." She stated "Okay, now I think you better go make dinner."

"I was hoping you would do it." Carla protested, "Of course you do... leave it, you better go down and watch TV with the kids, I'll take care of that later." I said, tired of all this, "It was a joke, you know?" Carla said, rolling her eyes. "Well, this is not the time for jokes, Carla." I sincerely said "Okay, no jokes. Let's go guys while Santi goes to see what's going on."

With that they left, leaving me at the door. I stayed for a couple of seconds looking in Jessica's direction. She's really surrounded by many papers, in some of them I could see drawings.

I decided to go in and see what had her so entertained. I put aside a couple of papers so I could sit down and that's when I noticed she has her glasses on, something I haven't seen in a while, what's more, they're the same ones she had stored in her desk drawer.

"Jess…" I said softly so as not to scare her "Mmm…" she responded immediately "What's got you so entertained?" I asked curiously "The papers." My girlfriend replied, "I can see that, but where did you get them from?" I insisted, "From the drawers and shelves." She said, still distracted, "And what's so interesting about them?"

"Apparently I had decided to set up a place so people with less resources would have a place to go and children could go and play." And it is at that moment I remembered the day she told me what she was thinking of doing. Now I understand why she's so deep in her thoughts and looking at those papers with so much interest.

"You want to get back to plans, right?" I asked even though I already knew the answer "I have the money, the means, those people shouldn't have waited so long for that to be done and I'm not going to allow it to continue like this. I have to do it." Jessica responded "Then that is what we will do." I affirmed and that's what manages to divert her attention from the papers. "Really?"

"Obviously, it's a big action you want to do, so I'll help you." I assured "Thank you love." She thanked with a big smile on her face "It's nothing, but I think you should rest at least for a while. They told me you've been here for hours." I said softly, "And they were standing there at the door watching what I was doing and afraid if they talked to me, I would kill them, well, I know I would."

"So, you knew they were there at the door?" I asked, laughing. "I didn't until you came." Jess responded, shrugging her shoulders. "Why?" I asked, curiosity taking over me. "I don't know, it's like something inside me realizes you're nearby without even paying attention."

"I feel lucky." I said sincerely, "You are, you're healthy, with a good life, I don't think you could ask for more." My girlfriend pointed out "I'm with the most beautiful and good girl in the world. That's being lucky." I added, "It seems that self-esteem is the same as always." She said, letting out a light laugh, "Yeah but we better go downstairs and make dinner before Carla burns our entire kitchen down."

"I hope she doesn't. I like our kitchen the way it is now" We laughed and got up to go to there. Luckily for us, Carla hadn't been in the kitchen to make dinner, so the two of us took care of making it. Before going to the kitchen, we went to the living room where the kids were. "Jess, where did you get the glasses?" Miky asked with a frown. "From a drawer."

"And why do you have them on?" He asked and Jess frowned. "To read?" Jessica asked which made Carla laugh "And why now? You never used them since I knew you." Miky responded, "Well, I don't know, a reflection?" Jess responded with a shrug. "Guys, Jessica used to wear glasses. She doesn't see an elephant in front of her." Carla joked

"Yeah?" the three asked, "Of course, that's why you had the glasses." Carla said, trying to contain her laughter, "Now I understand why she didn't read almost anything when it was right under your nose." Miky said laughing. "It seems that way." Jess nodded. "Another mystery solved by Michel Smith." The boy said, all proud. "But I told you so," Carla pointed out. "I said another mystery solved by Michel Smith, right?" He asked "Yes, but…"

"Well, that's what it means" We laughed and spent a couple more minutes in the living room talking until we decided it was better to go make dinner for the five of us. We get up from the couch and head to the kitchen. Jessica sits in one of the chairs while I look at what we can do for dinner.

"Beautiful, what do you want to eat?" I asked, focusing my gaze on her. "I don't care, as long as I can eat it..." she said, shrugging her shoulders. "How about lasagna?" I asked "Yeah. Can I ask you a question?" my girlfriend asks "Of course"

"Why didn't you tell me before we had a house?" She asked curiously "I wanted you to remember, but crazy Carla had to bring you here…" I started, but Carla quickly appeared in the kitchen "First of all, I'm not crazy, and second, I didn't bring her here. We were just passing by here to go home when she stopped."

"Did you remember where we lived?" I asked, focusing my gaze on my girlfriend. "No, it's weird thing, I honestly have no idea how to explain it." Jess responded, "She doesn't remember it in her memory, but as they say, the heart doesn't forget. That's how she found where you two lived. Now can you explain to me where the hell you got so many papers Jessica?"

"From the drawers and shelves." My girlfriend said, "Okay, maybe, but what did they have made you so interested?" Carla asked curiously. "A social centre." She answered simply and I could see how Carla began to think about it in her head "What does a social centre have to do with what those papers contain?"

"What Jessica is referring to is four years ago she was organizing everything to build something like a social centre where people in need or low-income people could stay and the children could play." I clarified and our best friend's face quickly lit up "That's a great idea Jessica!!!!" She exclaimed and I rolled my eyes "Of course it is, what did you expect from my girlfriend?" I asked ironically "So couple huh? What happened on that date that made you end up being a couple again?"

"Nothing that didn't have to happen. Why are you so gossipy Carla?" Jess asked, laughing. "Because I like to know everything, especially since I told Santi you felt the same way about him whether he told you your story or not." She said, completely convinced of what she's saying, "That's true."

"Now tell me how you are together again, I didn't expect it at all." Carla insisted "What?" both Jess and I asked at the same time, "The fact you're a couple so soon." She clarified "In reality we never stop being a couple" Jess responded with a shrug. "Do you remember?"

"No, but before I found out about this thing between us, he told me something, and after what I read it was clear our relationship never ended." Jessica replied, "At least I hope you had a good time last night, although from how I saw you this morning I know that's the case."

"Carla!!!!" I exclaimed, not wanting her to talk about it right now. "Ah, Santi is blushing again, I haven't seen that in years." Carla said laughing, "Don't be stupid, please" I asked "Am I stupid now?" Our best friend asked, raising an eyebrow. "Well yes, you are." I admitted, rolling my eyes. "Don't start arguing like little kids, please." Jess asked next to me, "How I missed it." Carla said with a smile on her face, probably remembering before everything happened.

"What?" Jess asked curiously "I missed all this." Our best friend clarified, "I don't think it's that big of a deal." replied Jess "That's because you don't remember, but we'll take care of what you know. Now seriously, I'm glad you're okay and back with us Jessica, you were missed."

"Thanks, I guess, I'm glad to be here too. Honestly, I expected it differently." My girlfriend said and both Carla and I frowned "Different in what way?" I asked curiously "Without knowing anything or knowing anything." She said, shrugging her shoulders. "Well, it seems you do know a lot of things."

"I don't know how" Jess answered honestly, "For many things, but that's not the point. We three have to talk about something serious." Carla said suddenly serious. "So serious you suddenly become this serious?" Jess asked, laughing, "Yes, this isn't a joke Jess considering you have a tumour in that head of yours, and has to be fixed. I was looking for the best doctor who operates on that type of tumour you have…"

"Wait, wait, wait. Why are we talking about this?" Jess asked, tensing up immediately. "Honey, Carla is right. The sooner they remove the tumour, the sooner you can get back to your life." I said, "But this is my life, that's the problem." Jess insisted, "But we can avoid those headaches."

"With a pill it will fix it." My girlfriend pointed out, "And the blindness? Is it also fixed with a pill?" Carla asked, probably annoyed by Jess's stubbornness. "Okay, maybe a pill won't fix that, but we don't have to go to a doctor right now, right?" She asked looking at me "We have to go right now. The sooner they take it out, the sooner the problems will go away and the less worried the kids and us will be." Carla responded seriously, and I better than anyone knew no one is going to be able to change that idea from her head. "Okay, but I don't want dramas, huh."

"You will have no dramas. By the way, would you like to meet up one of these days? Like old times and all." Carla said, trying to get all the tension out of the kitchen. "I don't know what those old days are like, but yeah, I like the idea" Jess responded with a smile again on her face "Do you think tomorrow? I have some things to show you."

"What?" Jess questioned "You'll see tomorrow." Carla said without saying anything else, "Watch out what you're going to tell her, Carla." I said "Nothing, it's work stuff." She responded "And what do I do in your work stuff? I don't have the slightest idea about music." Jess assured and we both laughed, because she did have quite an idea about music. "You have more than you think."

"I have to agree with her on that, you have more idea than you think, love" I confirmed what Carla had said, "Wow, for once you agree with me." Carla said laughing, "Because as they say, reason is given to crazy people." I responded "Are serious? Are we going to go back to the beginning?"

"I love you the same Carla, you know it." I assured, "That's not going to mean we go back to the same thing as years ago, right?" Our best friend asked and I laughed "Come on, you adored it. What's more, you always started." I stated, "Well, I might have missed it." She finally admitted, "What are you talking about?" Jess asked with a frown. "Nothing important, don't worry, love."

"Yeah, don't worry. You'll know what we're talking about." Carla responded, "But I want to know now." Jess protested, pouting, "Well, now you're not going know. You'll be left wanting." Carla said "Santi?" Jessica asked, looking in my direction and with that face I couldn't refuse not to say anything to her. She always did it when I wanted to know something four years ago, it seems things didn't change in that sense, although thinking about it, Jessica didn't change almost at all. She just doesn't remember anything at all, but otherwise, she's the same Jessica from four years ago.

"Carla and I have always had a strange relationship…" I began and Carla laughed. "And of course, you have to tell her." She said "Let him continue." Jess shushed without looking away from me. "Okay, please don't kill me." Carla asked jokingly, "The thing is even though we got along well, we liked to mess with each other. We were always making jokes and picking on each other. What Carla is referring to is with you here, things will go back to how they were four years ago. We'll get upset and you will be there to prevent us from fighting."

"Like two little children." Jessica said laughing "That's what we are." Carla stated, "I had already known it about you" Jess responded, "Are you going to tell me you didn't realize Santi is one too?" Carla asked in disbelief. "He hasn't done anything to make you think he's a kid."

"Always defending him, that hasn't changed." Carla said with a smile on her face "Well it's obvious I will always defend him; he's my boyfriend and I love him." Jessica responded with a shrug "Ah, I love you too queen." I responded "I love the couple you make; I'll never get tired of saying it."

"I've never heard that from you." Jess said with a smile on her face. "You don't remember it, dear, but I said it a lot." Carla informed and I nodded, because she had said it many times. "Do you hear that?" Jess asked suddenly. "I don't hear anything." I said, frowning "Me neither. What are we supposed to listen to?"

"Something. The kids are too quiet." Jessica said, getting up from the chair, "They'll be watching TV." Carla responded unconcernedly, "No, they always make noise. They must be doing something they shouldn't." She said "I doubt it." Carla denied "That's because you don't know them. I better go see what they are doing."

"Don't worry, I can go. You stay helping your boyfriend with dinner." Carla responded with a big smile "It's not…" My girlfriend started, but Carla denied "I like spending time with the kids, so yes, I'm going to go. You two have a lot of time to make up for." She insisted "As you wish."

"See you guys" With that, Carla left the kitchen leaving me and Jessica alone again. I started making dinner while Jessica handed me the ingredients, until I finished and put the lasagna in the oven.

"Santi." Jess whispered after a few minutes of silence, "Tell me love." I said "I'm scared." She whispered again and I focus all my attention on her upon hearing what she said "Afraid of what?" I asked, "Whatever the doctors can say." Jess said "Why?" I questioned, going towards her and hugging her. "In theory, I had to go every month to get it checked…"

"And you have done it, right?" I asked even though something told me she hadn't. "That's the thing." My girlfriend finally said, "How long have you been without going?" I questioned "One year." She answered "Why?" I gently insisted "Money, I couldn't afford it, but now I'm afraid it has grown so much they can't take it from me…"

"Love, don't worry. I'm sure you'll be fine, in fact, I assure you, you'll be fine. I'll get the best doctor so we can be in peace." I said, "But I don't want the best doctor, Santi." She protested, "But at this moment is what is we're going to get. You have to be in the best hands, and those will be the hands of the best surgeon in the country."

"That must be expensive." Jessica mumbled and I denied, because it might be a little expensive, but it's something we could afford. "Nothing we can't afford. Don't worry everything will be fine." I assured, "I hope so." She whispered, "You'll see how it will, trust me, ok?" I asked and she nodded "I trust you."
