“So…am I coming over or not?”

Yes. Maybe. No.

Definitely no.

“Okay. Call me when you’re done with your morning appointments.”

“Cool.”

There was a short, tense silence.

“Liam, are you gonna fuck her?”

This generation was definitely more straightforward.

“She’s not spending the night, no.”

“But are you gonna fuck her?”

“Kieran. I answered your question.”

“Oh. Right. Cool. No problem.”

Liam smiled and closed his phone, then tucked it back into his pocket. Now it was time to go back down there and put a stop to the charade he had going on with Netty.

Dinner over, Liam and Netty sat quietly at the kitchen table, not completely at ease with each other. Netty played with her snow peas, and when she looked up from her plate at him, her eyes shone like amethysts in the dancing candle light. “So, how was your nephew’s birthday party?”

“It was nice. Austin had a good time.”

“What did you get him?”
