Escape pt3

I stared at the sky overhead. It was early and there were stars out, but they were slowly fading away. The sun that couldn't be seen yet was setting off a purplish hue onto the clouds. They lighted up the area around me. Jakie was sleeping soundly next to me. I was tired but my head wouldn't stop turning. We'd been working in the mines for four weeks now. Something had happened to the Osaton's reinforcements, so they had started to let us sleep and gave us food and water occasionally.

Jakie stirred next to me. "Bublapfffffffft...." She gave a small yawn then turned around and fell back asleep. I looked away from her and into the forest a little ways away. Guards were standing near the edge, in case anyone tried to escape.

They looked tired, some of them nodding off into sweet sleep.

I had been thinking about escaping for a while now. I had told jakie about my plans, but she said that wasn't happening till my back healed up. We'd have to bring food and water and that wouldn't be so easy. Plus taking the time to plan everything out and choose the right moment.

I looked at my side where the cut from the whip was, moving the torn, filthy clothing out of the way. Since that time I'd earned myself a few more. Thankfully not as bad, and with the food and water, they'd been able to heal. I still had a scar though. I sighed. Since my side had healed Jakie Sam and I had talked a lot about our plans.

Thankfully her brother was alright. We met him only a few weeks ago. He was sleeping next to her. I looked at him to see if he was awake. He was laying on his back, eyes open, but he didn't seem to notice me looking. Many months working in the fields to keep him and his sister afloat had made him very tan. plus all the lifting he'd done in the mines. He was very strong.

He had black hair like his sister, brown eyes, thick eyebrows and a slightly crooked nose. Sam was kinda attractive.

But you'd have to look closely to realize that.

I didn't see him too often since he was always so busy back when he worked in the fields. But now that we were all enslaved here, we chose to stick together. Sam was a quiet guy and mostly kept to himself, although he teased his sister a lot. He cared a lot about her from what I'd come to see over the years.

He blinked, then, as if sensing I was watching him, he turned his head to look at me. "Can't sleep?"

"Yeah," I said turning away quickly. I looked up again. The sun was starting to rise and a few people were starting to stir. He sat up and looked down at his sister who had started snoring. SLAP! I turned quickly after hearing the noise and saw Sam, smiling wickedly at his sister who had let out a yelp and then started to groan.

"Five more minutes..." Jakie said nodding off back into sleep. SLAP! Sam slapped her again and again until she bolted upright, turning to glare at him. Then she changed her expression to look pitiful.

"Oh, brother." She said in a mournful town. "Can't you have mercy on me? I've been slaving away for days. I'm tired." He ignored her pitiful expression and said "You either wake up to my slaps or

the lashes from the men in yellow. Your choice."

"Ugh, you can just shake me you don't have to slap me." Sam and I glanced at each other. "You wouldn't wake up even if Beka started growling right in your ear while jumping on you," I said emotionlessly.

Beka was her hudge spirit animal. He was a tiger and a level green fighting type. Green was the third-highest level, so he was pretty high up there, which is why she had been part of the army. She had only just entered when the Osaton people proclaimed war on our tribe. You could tell The levels of spirit animals by there aurora color. Yellow was the lowest, then orange, green, blue, red and purple. Purple being the highest. The levels would get harder to reach each time you leveled up.

Beka was a fighting type.

He could lend Jakie strength. But other than that, if they got into a fight with someone, he'd do all the brute force. She'd mostly have to rely on herself. Although Beka was extremely protective.

"Not you too Speranza!? You're my best friend. You should be helping me out here!" She said trying to sound hurt. I just laughed and got up. Putting my long filthy red hair into a braid. The other people had already started to get up. Desperate to wake up before the slave drivers started whipping them awake. I turned to Sam and gave him a sad smile, then looked at Jakie who was sitting on the ground rubbing her eyes.

Sam stood up and held out his hand for Jakie. He was even taller than her and towered-over most people. She just slapped it away and yawned. She tried to get up but fell backward onto her bum. "Ugh." She groaned. Sam held out his hand again and this time, she took it. Using his hand for support she got up while rubbing her bum. "aw."She turned to glare at me but I wasn't paying attention.

I watched, as a few men in yellow started walking among the people that hadn't woken up yet, whipping them. People started yelling and bolting upright. Soon they were being led back into the mines. The men started tossing moldy bread at them while laughing, calling out to them like they were a flock of birds.
