Following Nin's song, you wind through hidden paths and over cold brooks, seeking the spirits behind the animals you see. Squirrel is everywhere, of course, leaping from tree to tree, eternally hunted by Fox and Owl, whose eyes gleam with hidden secrets. Trout dances in the brooks, leaping into the sunlight before plunging back into the depths. Though you don't see him, Wildcat's claws have scored the trees. Porcupine bumbles and bristles. Deeper in the shadows of the oldest woods, you hear Whippoorwill, calling the spirits of the dead. Butterfly is here, shivering in the pale sunlight, proud as a jeweled empress.
And of course, I am too. Maybe I've become a bit of a city cat lately, but my power is in the wild places, and in the sky.
Then you feel the earth move beneath your feet. Massive, implacable, older than stones: the Bear spirits.
