The token is used to discover death energy, dark elemental energy, and shadow energy. All three energies that are needed to drive Sam's soul are ghosts, specters, shadow undead and even the puppets.
The men of the Magman clan were asked to inject their energy into the tokens constantly.
In fact, a couple of Sam's souls were caught because of this method in the first few minutes.
