Feeling a lot better with a little gold on her belt Jace looked up and down the street.
'First things first. I need some blood!'
Jace spied a little urchin gang cruising down the beulevard. One little urchin caught Jace's eye and then ran over like it was the end of the world.
It was impossible to tell from a distance whether this particular urchin was a boy or a girl, but upon speaking it was clear.
"Yes, ma'am, what can I do you for?"
The little girl said in an excited voice.
Having held up a silver dollar Jace smiled to see the polite and prompt attitude.
"Yes, bring over your friends. I want to buy a horse and cart, food, gear, potions, and whatever other supplies. Can you do that?"
Instead of reacting as Jace would have expected the girl shrunk a bit and then coughed out.
"Are you sure ma'am. Don't you just want me to help you?"
The girl said giving Jace a wink.
"No, it is okay, I will give you this to pay for the goods. The rest will get whatever is left. You work it out for me and when you are done you will deserve this second silver. All for yourself."
Jace shook her head and doubled down on her intentions.
"Yes, …, y, y, y, yes, ma'am."
It was strange the girl was terrified to do what Jace asked. After reflecting Jace realized that an entire silver dollar might make the little girl the target of the other children. Or maybe even more likely there might be some malicious backers behind the kids.
Regardless the girl ran over to her gang and after a few moments they all dispersed.
"Are they really going to do all our shopping for us?"
Tony was aghast.
"They really will and they better do a good job to, or they won't get the money."
Originally Jace just wanted to make a big scene so that a thief would try to steal from her.
It would have been great. She would have had the chance to have at least a taste. If the situation was right she could even kill the thief. That would be even better.
But now the situation was a little different. Jace was starting to get the feeling that there was organized crime in this little city.
'This just makes it better? What are they going to do to me? Pull me into a dark alley? Or maybe it will just be a pickpocket. My personal favorite will be being ambushed by thugs outside the city.'
After a while the kids had gathered quite a bit of goods and gear.
The little girl came up and very cutely held out her hand. Completely confident that she had earned her silver dollar the girl looked expectantly at Jace.
Making a show of checking out their work, Jace made sure to examine each item. Many of which were rather rag tag. But Jace didn't mind. The kids knew they would earn the change, so they had gone out of their way to bargain for the best deals and get the very cheapest item. To be expected.
Giving the silver dollar to the girl she very obviously turned and gave the coin to the oldest boy in the bunch behind her.
Frowning at that interaction the pylon made sure to remember that boy.
Then they started making their way out of town.
"Should we buy one of these close in farms?"
Testiness the waters Tony asked a question.
"No, the farther away the better. Let's walk for another hour."
Eschewing the seat in the cart they both walked for the next hour. Tony made no effort to communicate. And Jace was content to remain silent as well.
Her main job right at this moment was being ready to protect him. For ever since they left the city walls they had been followed.
Three shadows moved behind them.
'Now I just need to make sure to knock Tony out when the action starts.'
Tony was just around to provide her a bit of love. There was no reason to make his life harder by telling him who she really was. No good coukd come from telling him. He would just become a hollow shell of a man.
'Wait, what am I thinking? Who cares if he shrivels up and becomes scared of me?'
That's right, she was a pylon, the most powerful being in the universe. Or at least she had the potential to have the most power in the universe. If this man bugged out then the god of bugs would probably just provide her a new man to obsess over.
"Tony, I need to admit something to you."
She decided to be honest with Tony from now on. If he didn't have the balls to deal with it, then he wasn't the man for her.
"Here it comes. This is the part in the anime when the NPC reveals the main plot line."
He said something weird under his breath.
Jace ignored his weirdness and just went on with what she had to do.
"I am a pylon."
"Hmmm, okay?"
"You must not have pylons where you are from."
She said and then went on to explain.
"You know, pylons are super powerful beings who feed on blood and destruction."
"Ah! I got it. You are a vampire!"
Tony seemed to happy as if everything was clicking for him.
"So that's why you want to live so far away from the city! You want some privacy and probably some freedom to hunt!! It all makes sense."
Agape Jace had to take a moment to realize what had just happened.
'I think this is what my sisters call mansplaining?'
The more Jace thought about it, though the more she liked it. Vampires were a thing. She knew all about them. In fact they sleep in coffin's at night. Actually, being a vampire was a perfect cover story.
'I could disabuse him of his assumption… But she was unwilling maybe even unable to make him understand without breaking him.
'He will get it eventually.'
"No, I am not a vampire. But that is a good idea, it would be a nice cover story. Thank you!"
Actually Jace was pleased. He was really awkward about it, but it was actually a really good idea.
'Having someone to bounce ideas off of it actually very nice.'
The conversation wasn't on the level of mutual understanding. It would have been better if she could have a partner that she could share her soul with. But expecting nothing and getting Tony was turning out to be very pleasant.
"Sure, sure, okay "pylon" we will do it your way."
He obviously didn't believe that she wasn't a vampire.
She rolled her eyes. Vampires had so many weaknesses. Weaknesses that she didn't have.
'Well, I guess I have different weaknesses.'
Shaking her head she returned her focus to the thugs following behind. Already one of them had circled ahead.
"Heads up, Tony. We are about to be attacked!"
