“…then one year apart won’t do any harm, will it?”

Shane felt the corner of his mouth twitch, a smile jerking into place briefly before smoothing out again.

“Guess not.”

“We have a deal?” Dad asked.

One year, and not even that with the two summers here, and free driving lessons, and no cadets to be constantly pinned in place for. He’d have to negotiate on borrowing the Land Rover, or maybe taking Jason’s off his hands once he’d signed up proper, but…

But it wasn’t going, not like it had been before. He had the time to come back, and he wouldn’t have to fight a war every time, and…

And it would be understood why. He wouldn’t have to hide and lie and make things up anymore, wouldn’t have to go back in the box. He could study for university, talk applications with Dad, come and see his boyfriend, and not have to choose between the two. He could have his family and Luke. He could stay at home and stay himself. He could…be.

“Yeah,” Shane said.
