“You still going to Cornwall?”

“I dunno,” he repeated, kicking the games console to switch it on. “Nobody’s said anything about it, and I don’t want to bring it up.”

“Cheer up,” she said in that ruthless manner he kind of hate-loved about her. “It’s done now, isn’t it? And if they dump you here, fuck ‘em and stay with Luke. By the way, you are so banned from my house.”

“Why?”

“Because your dad rang up my mum asking if you were at my house and she told him to get fucked ‘cause it was like eleven at night and she’d just got the baby off to sleep and they had a huge slanging match and now my mum thinks you’re a total jarhead wanker idiot.”

Shane laughed, despite himself. Sophie’s mum was even worse than Sophie for not backing off, and there was a good reason he and Sophie had long avoided their families coming into much contact

“Anyway,” Sophie said, “I guess your dad didn’t go mental and bury you under the patio, so can’t be all bad.”
