Theory Testing

Heron decided to wait a week to test out his theory. He wanted Elswyth to calm down a bit first, that way he could easily talk her into letting him test it. He did however talk to Kur about it.

Kur had actually been thinking along the same lines that it was a possibility. This made Heron even more resolved to test it out. He was aware that Kur had a better understanding of magic than him. Naturally so, the elf had been a wizard longer than Heron had been alive, plus had not had to sneak around doing it. Just being able to publicly learn and perform the art made a huge difference.

That being said, Heron did not feel inferior to Kur. Sure Kur knew more of the magical theories and whatnot, but Kur had actually told Heron that his learning of magic was admirable. The fact he had managed to self teach himself enough to get started in an environment were it was difficult was not an easy task.

It was still only natural though that Heron highly valued the input of the more learned wizard. If Kur had dismissed an idea as an impossibility Heron would have accepted it pretty quickly. Afterall, most had been learned about the nature of magic.

Elswyth was against it. He had not yet decided whether to mention it to her or not, but she had overheard him and Kur talking. Not surprising really with how much she refused to leave his side. Even though they had been whispering, she heard them talking of it. She did not want to test his theory at all.

He was not surprised. In order to test his theory, he would need her to leave his side. He was pretty sure that this spell wasn't just on him. He did not think it was a coincidence that both times it had affected him had been when they had been a good length's apart.

Also the fact that when the spell had first been laid, they had seen each other's memory. It wouldn't be too surprising if it had become some sort of binding spell. It wouldn't be that weird for magic to do that, and honestly it would be an actual blessing if that was all that some wildly casted magic had done.

So Heron set about convincing Elswyth to let them test it. Which was not easy. Elswyth could be very stubborn. Which was both something he admired about her, and sometimes, like at this moment in time, was really frustrated by.

It took several hours of talking to her to convince her. In the end, it was only because they promised that they would do it in a controlled environment, and Kur would stay at Heron's side. Which was already what they had planned to do. They weren't going to be doing anything risky. But Elswyth needed the promise.

Sometimes, Heron could not understand why exactly Elswyth worried about him so much. Especially because he had been growing stronger. But she really took her duties towards him seriously. Well, it wasn't completely annoying. Sometimes it was a bit nice knowing this ranger girl cared about him.

Anyway, even after convincing her, they had to wait for a few days. Kur said that they probably needed an extra person for this in order to do it without Heron actually fainting again. Naturally he wanted to get Tira to help.

Heron did not argue. He could see Kur's point and he would rather not faint either. Elswyth was definitely for it. But they had to wait for Tira to be free. Apparently, she had taken a job so she was not able to immediately come. But she would be free in a few days. Meanwhile, Kur and Heron hammered out the details of how they would go about testing this. Which was fairly simple, but they did need to know exactly what they were doing.

When Tira was free they set about testing it. Kur and Heron would remain in the library during this. Elswyth was to very slowly walk away and pay attention to any change in how she might be feeling. Tira would go get her if Heron started showing signs.

It shouldn't be dangerous. It was mostly inconvenient. And it was better to know for sure, rather than be surprised later. Elswyth still grumbled a little under her breath but started walking. Heron picked up a book, deciding to read while he waited. Kur and Tira had started chatting together. They looked very cozy together.

Once again, Heron idly wondered if Tira knew Kur liked her, or if she was too close and so didn't see it. He found it hard to believe she could at all miss that look of blatant adoration. Anyway, it was none of his business.

He returned to his book. He was trying to distract himself, because he felt rather nervous actually. If he was incorrect then they had nothing and they would have to retry to figure it out all over again.
