After noticing that his watch was broken, Ash sat up a little straighter and scanned the area surrounding the makeshift camp before asking, "What time is it?" Misty had been productive, it had to be said; as far as Ash could tell, she had not used any tinder other than prairie grass to get the fire started, and the only thing cooking over said fire was something that smelled like ratatouille, despite the fact that the majority of the spitted meat had been consumed. "And to what extent have I been absent?"

Misty commented, "You slept for a couple of hours." "You must have taken quite a thrashing, and if my calculations are correct, it is getting close to midnight now. The day before yesterday, my watch stopped working." Misty leaned back and altered her position so that she was closer to the fire. The dog days of summer were almost over, and the evenings were just starting to become noticeably cooler. As Ash stood up from the bedroll and reached for his backpack, she asked him, "So what are you doing out here all by yourself?" as she looked over her shoulder at him. You only have two Pokémon with you, and the road isn't exactly the safest place in the world.

Pikachu had curled up next to Ash's leg and started lightly napping, feeling more secure since Growlithe had woken up and begun pacing around the camp as if to keep watch. As Ash pulled his backpack closer to him, he made sure not to disturb Pikachu, and he made sure not to wake Growlithe either. Ash came to the conclusion that the fact that Pikachu had so simply accepted Growlithe as a member of the squad was a very positive omen. Pikachu had always been quite excellent at analysing people's personalities. He cast a quick look in Misty's direction. The trainer rummaged through his pack to double check that everything was still there before saying, "I'm headed back to Pallet Town." Pallet Town was where they had first met. "I really didn't intend to come out this far in the first place but..." his voice trailed off a little bit. "But..." "I let my desire to catch a Pokémon today get the best of me," I said.

Misty gave a little shrug. "I suppose that's something that happens to all of us at some point... Do I have it right that Pallet Town is just a couple of hours away from here?"

Ash nodded. He inquired, "Where exactly are you going, and how long will it take us to get there, maybe two and a half hours if we make excellent time?" "There is no other way to get from Pallet Town to Viridian City on this road." Ash reasoned that he would be able to identify her if she were from Pallet. Nobody new is allowed to move in without the other residents being informed first.

Misty remarked, as she turned her head away from Ash, "I'm not really heading anyplace in particular." "I simply like to travel, 'ya know? There are a great deal of fascinating places to visit all throughout the world."

She just used the word "interesting" to make a reference to Pallet Town, right? Ash was surprised to catch himself pondering. The fitness instructor asked, "So are you going to see Professor Oak or something?," as he was at a loss to think of anything else that was located in his hometown that was interesting to see.

Misty nodded, "yes, precisely," she responded in a snappy manner. "When I was at Pewter City, that's where I first heard about Professor Oak," she paused before continuing. I made up my mind to investigate him in order to determine whether or not he was indeed extraordinary. Thus, "Her tone became slightly more upbeat, and she switched her attention back to Ash. "I'm going to suppose that you're currently making your way back there. If we are both headed in the same direction, there is no reason why we can't go together."

"There's safety in numbers," Ash said as he shifted onto his knees and carefully packed his bedroll into his backpack. "There's safety in numbers." Other from that, I wouldn't mind the company, and it would be impolite to refuse the offer to the girl who was the one who ended up saving my life. He gave Misty a small grin as Growlithe, noticing that the group was getting ready to leave, paced over to its new trainer and sat still, wary, and at arm's length from Ash. Growlithe had seen that the group was getting ready to leave. After Ash completed the process of packing his belongings, he spoke to Misty, "So, where are you from?"

Misty put out the fire by kicking some dirt on it, which caused the flames to be reduced to smouldering coals. She then spread the embers around with her shoe, which caused the camp to be in complete darkness. Misty was able to locate her pack and sling it over one shoulder using the meagre amount of light that was provided by the crescent moon that illuminated the small group. "Far to the north," she responded, looking between Ash and his Growlithe as she spoke. She questioned, "When exactly did you catch that one?"

Ash stood up and adjusted his backpack before continuing his story. "About ten minutes before the Fearow tried to turn us into birdseed," he said.

Misty arched her brow thoughtfully. She inquired with a question, "And he's already taken to you?" "That is quite remarkable. Growlithe are often independent-minded creatures that are difficult to subdue."

Ash continued, looking over at the orange dog, which cautiously responded to his gaze by perking up its ears. "Well," Ash said, continuing to look at the dog. "I believe that the fact that he is the lone survivor of his pack was a contributing factor. In a small wooded area not too far away from here, I discovered a large number of decomposing Growlithe. I don't know what caused them to perish, but I'm just pleased this little guy made it out all fine," he looked back at the Growlithe and smiled warmly, trying to make sure the Pokémon appreciated the gesture."

"Oh," said Misty. "Well, you're right, that very well could have played a role in it. Growlithe are typically at their most vicious when they are in groups, therefore the fact that it is by alone may cause it to be more submissive... Not to mention the fact that your Pikachu doesn't appear to be a weakling." She noticed a few scars winding across Pikachu's coat, which could be seen as rougher patches of darker yellow fur on the Pokémon's back, sides, and even his face. These scars were visible because Pikachu had been injured.

Ash nodded as he and Misty started walking southward while he gave the surrounding area as thorough of a once-over as he could in the terrible light. Misty followed behind them. He addressed it in a nonchalant manner, "Pikachu and I have gone through a lot together." We've gotten ourselves into some pretty difficult scrapes, but with to each other's support, we've been able to get through somehow..." Ash beamed with satisfaction as he thought back on some of the enjoyable experiences he and Pikachu had shared over the past five years. "There was this one time," he began, "when Professor Oak and I were doing some fieldwork in a cave just East of Viridian, we got separated by a cave-in and for two days it was just Pikachu and I wandering around in this underground maze, trying to avoid all the Pokémon and find our way out." "There was this one time," he began, "when Professor Oak and I were doing some fieldwork in a cave just East of Viridian.
