After a while, Mike arrived with two cases of soda.
The lively atmosphere was staged again.
Chris had even prepared a camera, eager to capture Mike's reaction to the surprise.
If Mike wanted to erase the video this time, it wouldn't happen without offering up a late-night snack.
"Brother, you are my own brother! Please take me along the next time you head into the wild," Mike pleaded, nearly hugging Chris's leg. "I don't even care about Shiny Pokémon—I just want to feel the thrill of seeing one!"
"Besides, I haven't been planning to catch any wild Pokémon lately," Chris declined politely.
The group settled in, chatting while enjoying some grilled snacks and soft drinks. They were a lively bunch, and the mood was upbeat and festive.
Before anyone noticed, three rounds of drinks had passed, and it was already 10 PM.
Victoria and Tyler had plans to visit West Lake tomorrow, so they decided to call it a night and head back to rest.
Victoria and Tyler's success caught Chris by surprise. It seemed persistence paid off in the end.
Before everyone left, they helped Chris tidy up the yard and took care of the trash. As they were stepping out of Chris's small courtyard, Amy suddenly remembered something and turned back to Chris at the door.
"By the way, let me remind you of one thing."
"Go ahead," Chris replied.
"There's going to be a welcome party once the school year starts. You'd better be prepared."
"Prepared for what? I'm not good at any kind of performance." Chris had taken piano lessons in his previous life, but he wasn't exactly great at it.
"Come on, this is Pokémon University, not just any ordinary school," Amy rolled her eyes. "Clearly, you're clueless. The orientation party is organized by the senior students for us freshmen."
"But the grand finale of Dragon University's annual Orientation is the Pokémon battle!"
"A senior representative versus a freshman representative."
"And you, as the winner of the freshman military training competition, are automatically the new representative. So, don't get too beaten up!"
"That sounds harsh."
"Be confident. It's a Dragon University tradition, meant to show freshmen like you what it means to be humble, so you don't get too arrogant." Amy gave Chris a pat on the shoulder before turning to leave. "Good luck—you'll need it!"
"Great," Chris muttered, rubbing his chin. "But what if I beat a senior too?"
The night passed quietly.
The next morning, Chris got up early. He had made plans with Olivia and Counselor Tang to visit the East China Sea Dragon Nest today!
Classes were starting the next day, and Chris didn't want to take any time off. He didn't want to wait until the next vacation week, so today was the day. He was eager to see what kind of Dragon-type Pokémon he could find!
After getting up, he prepared breakfast for his Pokémon, then changed into a tracksuit and grabbed his bag. Chris hopped onto his sonic bicycle and rode to Dragon University's east gate.
Dragon University's west gate had a bridge across the sea, while the east gate led to a dock. The East China Sea Dragon Nest was out at sea, so Chris and Olivia needed to depart from the dock.
When Chris arrived at dock, it was just 6:30 AM—half an hour early for their 7:00 AM meetup. Yet, Olivia was already there, waiting.
Today she was dressed in a pink tracksuit, but even the loose fabric couldn't hide her well-proportioned figure. She wore white sneakers, and her hair was tied up in a ponytail with a black ribbon, adding a touch of cuteness to her youthful charm.
"She's really cute," Chris thought to himself.
A random thought suddenly popped into his mind: "If you're in a relationship with a counselor, it wouldn't count as a teacher-student relationship, right?"
He'd heard that Olivia had also graduated from Dragon University, just a few years before.
"She graduated recently, meaning she's only three or four years older than me," Chris calculated.
"The saying goes, 'A junior girl is worth her weight in gold,' so that's pretty nice, right?"
Wait, what was he thinking?! Chris shook his head, snapping himself out of it. If he kept going down this line of thought, he'd be naming their future children soon!
"You're early," Olivia noted, clearly impressed with Chris's punctuality. "Let's get going. The sooner we leave, the sooner we can return."
"Oh, by the way, do you have a Water-type or Flying-type Pokémon?" she asked.
"I have a Frogadier."
"Never mind, use mine," Olivia said, tossing a Poké Ball toward the shore.
Suddenly, a massive, ten-meter-long Gyarados splashed into the water, glaring fiercely at Chris, as if to say, "Who are you, and why are you with Olivia?"
"The East China Sea Dragon Nest is out at sea, and it's in a unique location. The school doesn't have direct boats to get there, so you'll ride my Gyarados."
"However, your breeding department will have research courses at the Dragon Nest in the future. I recommend you catch a Flying-type or a large Water-type Pokémon to use as transportation when you have the chance."
"Got it, Tutor Olivia," Chris responded quickly. He'd been thinking about catching a mount Pokémon for a while now.
After all, there are some excellent Pokémon in the Dragon-type family that could serve as mounts: Salamence, Hydreigon, Dragonite, Garchomp… (Though I did see someone riding a Garchomp in the anime during *Sun & Moon*, I always thought it was just an earthbound Pokémon…)
Which quasi-Dragon Pokémon should I choose as the leader of my future Dragon-type team? Chris thought to himself.
Under the watchful gaze of the grumpy Gyarados, Chris climbed onto its back. He wanted to stand on its head like a cool trainer, but the Pokémon wasn't having any of it.
Chris smirked. "Maybe I should catch a Shiny Gyarados instead."
A Shiny Magikarp that could evolve into a Shiny Gyarados? That sounded a lot easier to manage.
Plus, Gyarados can technically fly too. (When Chris first saw Gyarados flying in the *Legends: Arceus* game, it blew his mind, and suddenly, its Flying-type made sense.)
"If even Gyarados can fly, what other Pokémon can't?"
A certain unnamed Pokémon, probably a land-bound one, grumbled and quietly exited Chris's daydream.
Honestly, having a red Shiny Gyarados as a mount would be awesome. The best part? It would look cool! A Gyarados flying in the sky could easily be mistaken for Rayquaza from a distance.
And not only that—Gyarados can Mega Evolve, too. Whether it's a regular ability or a hidden one, it's strong either way and worth the effort to train.
"Yep, I'm definitely going to catch a Shiny Magikarp," Chris resolved, glancing over at Olivia's Gyarados.
And it has to be female!
With the morning sun lighting their path, Chris and Olivia set off for the Dragon Nest in the East China Sea.
