The time is now for me to give Anna her money.I walk beside her,matching her steps,and hold up the money I’ve saved.She takes it without a word of thanks.But that’s all right.I owe her so much more than a few dollars.
We sneak to the train station.I didn’t notice before,but there’s a bend in the track before it arrives at the station,surrounded by trees on both sides.This is where we hide.When the train stops to unload some of the cars,the end cars will be concealed by the trees.The train isn’t due for a few hours,but we can hardly parade Anna through town when people are out and about,when no one has known she’s been in town for a whole month.
I nod off against Ethan’s shoulder as the morning wears on.I jump as a train arrives,but Ethan holds me back.It’s the wrong train.There are no cattle,and it’s very short.We want the next train.
Two hours later,I can hear it in the distance.Adrenaline rushes through my body,and I start to shake.This is it.
