Chapter 34
“They’re the last two I have left,”Hetty says.“I have four other boys,all sold to Mississippi to work the fields.Mary and I worked in the kitchen,and Gabriel was a field hand.When I found out Mary was going to be sold,we all set off for Canada.They’re not going to take these two from me.”
Anna and I share the same things we told Abram,settling in and putting our things to the side.
“How did you get a rifle?”Gabriel asks in awe.
“Just walked into town with Fred and got one,”I explain,as if it were the easiest thing in the world.
We tell our story about Sam and Fred,and the great love they had for each other.Our new friends tell us how they traveled to get this far,and soon it’s very late.I’m exhausted,and Anna keeps nodding off.
“Here,we have extra blankets,”says Gabriel.
Anna and I lay on the tunnel floor,wrapped in our blankets.The others prepare themselves for bed,and I drift off just as the lantern is turned out.
