Chapter 22
That first night is like a dream.We are fresh,reasonably well-fed,and well-rested.We finally speed up to a gallop at times,but the night isn’t quite light enough to keep up the pace we want.We ride past endless fields of cotton,corn,and tobacco.By dawn we are forced to let the horses rest.We ride through a tobacco field to a good-size woods,and spend the morning sitting in a clearing,letting the horses graze.
Sam passes out dried venison.“Best to ration out the food.But I expect I’ll be able to shoot some meat for us if we need it.”
“This is it,”I say,looking at the sky.“It’s about time that everyone will notice we’re missing.I’m afraid to start riding again.We might be caught as soon as we get out of these trees.”
Anna is visibly shaking.“Should we stay here until night time?”
Fred and Sam glance at each other.
