Chapter 7

Keeping his hand on Leo’s back, Caleb reached forth with his other, taking hold of Leo’s hand. “Yes, Leo, I know what happened to you. And you want to know a little secret?”

“Hm?” His chin was trembling as he fought the urge to cry again.

Caleb leaned closer, speaking in a hushed tone. “I was there, Leo, that night, when it all happened.”

Leo stared at him, searching his eyes for a trace of deceit, and failing to find it. The shock he felt was more than when he learned Caleb was a cop.

He was there. He knows, he understands. How do I know he isn’t just saying that as a means to get through to you? Because why would he lie about such a horrible thing? No one would. I just hope it’s not the only reason he’s taken an interest in me.

“Come back to the barn with me, Leo, please,” Caleb cajoled. “I think you’ll find it very beneficial.”

“I…” He sighed, shoulders slumping. “Okay.”
