Chapter 2

A few days passed and Harper was able to get Jane enrolled in the same school as Jessica and Xavier. This morning was different for the first time since she had arrived, she was going to school. Omar went to work as usual; Harper had gotten ready before the kids woke up. She was cooking breakfast in the kitchen while the kids upstairs getting ready. The first one down was Jane, Harper was surprised to see her. "You're an early riser?" Harper didn't know Jane got up this early, since she had arrived, she was in her room for most of the day. Harper did take her out to places, however, she never really asked permission to go anywhere. "Yep," she said as she sat down. "Xavier will show you where your classes are at," Harper told her. "Okay."

After some time, the others came down to eat. They all rode on Harper's car to school. Once they got there, Harper said her goodbyes and went to her office. Jess decided to head to her locker, leaving Jane and Xavier alone. However, as soon as he saw his friends he told Jane, "I'm sure you can figure out where your classes are on your own." Then went with his friends.

Jane didn't care much for school, so she decided to walk around the school for a while and Evan eventually texted her wanting to see her. They decided that they'd meet in a few hours. During a passing period, Jane spotted Jess getting bullied by two girls. She noticed no one seemed to care, so as they were walking away, she passed by one of them.

Jane tripped her making it look like she barely moved her foot. The girl fell to the ground causing everyone to look at the girl. "HEY PRICK! What's your problem?" She yelled at Jane. "You talking to me?" Jane played dumb. "Of course I'm talking to you, you're the one who tripped me," she said as she stood up. "I didn't trip you; you fell by yourself." "Why know what, I'll let it slide. Don't ever say I didn't warn you." She said with a smile on her face. "Whatever," Jane said as she walked away.

Jane walked up to Jess and asked," You, okay?" "Yeah, thanks," Jess thanked her. "I have no idea what you're talking about. Those girls fell on their own," Jane remarked and Jess played along. "Yeah, they are usually not that clumsy. Must be one of those days." "Guess so. Hey, do you know where this hallway is?" Jane pulled out her schedule.

"I'm guessing Xavier decided his friends to hang out with his friends instead. He's always like this, and for some reason, my mom and dad are okay with it. I don't know why they suck up to him so much," Jess expressed. "Anyways, here, I'll show you where your classes are," Jess took Jane's schedule and began giving her a tour of the school.

During class, Jane received a text from Evan. He wanted to meet up, and they agreed to meet in the school parking lot. So, the next passing period Jane found a school exit and walked towards the parking lot. She saw his car and hopped in.

"I'm glad I could see you today," Evan told her. "Thanks, I guess," Jane said not sure how to respond yet, trying to be polite. "How's your first day of school going?" He tried to keep the conversation going. "Boring, the only exciting thing that happened was me putting a stuck-up girl in her place. I don't belong here," Jane said. "Yeah, this place seems perfect and normal. Something we'll both never be," he said with tears forming in his eyes. "We couldn't we grow up in a place like this in a home like theirs?" he continued. "I did once, but it was ripped away. Life gives you things and then rips them away," she told him. He pulled out two bottles of beer and a bag of pills. He handed a bottle to Jane, then took a pill from the bag, and then gave her the bag. "A gift, for us having the worst luck on earth." "Thanks." Jane and Evan both swallowed a pill before drinking from their bottles. "Do you mind if I drive around for a while?" Evan asked. "Nope, let's go," Jane said as she put her seatbelt on. Evan just looked at her confused. "I think I've been with this family for too long," she took off her seatbelt and Evan started the car.

After a few hours, Evan dropped her off at a store. Jane was walking back to her foster family's house when she saw a lady getting mugged. She stopped, and the muggers told her to keep moving. She saw they had knives and walked toward them. The lady ran and the muggers tried to attack Jane. One ran straight toward her, "rookie," she said as she moved to the side and stuck her foot in. Causing him to trip and drop the knife. She quickly grabbed it and placed it in her pocket. The second mugger ran toward her. She grabbed his arm and with her right hand sent an uppercut to his chin. Knocking him out, she grabbed his knife and walked away.

As she was close to the house, she saw Jessica walking alone. Jane walked up next to her and Jess said," Mom and Xavier left after I told them I was going to look for you." "Why?" Jane was genuinely confused. "I didn't want them to leave you behind, turns out they left me too." "And here I was thinking your life was perfect," Jane confessed. Jess had to ask," Where were you anyway? I know you weren't in your classes, the teachers told me the new student never showed up, at least to the last few classes." "I can't tell you, all I can say is school isn't my thing," Jane told her. "I guess we all have our secrets, just try, okay?" she asked Jane. Jane stopped in her tracks, causing Jess to turn around and look at her. "What's…." before Jess could ask, she interrupted. "No one has ever said that to mean." "No one has ever told you to try?" Jess asked. "Yeah, you would think that after everyone I've met that one of them would say that. Then again, they aren't the best people, including me," Jane explained. "I see the person who helped me at school today, who didn't ignore what was happening like everyone else. That's the person I see." Jess smiled at her, and Jane returned a small smile. Then they continued to walk to the house.

Once Jane was sure the family was asleep, she locked her bedroom door and opened the window. She went to her secret hideout, where she had been training for years. She walked over to an outfit display. It was nearly almost finished with her red suit. She took it out of the display and placed it on the table. After getting her sowing kit out she continued to sow her suit.
