People defined what was beyond death differently.
Many people believed that there was a heaven or hell beyond death, where one would go according to the deeds they had in their life. Many others believed that nothing awaited them other then complete destruction of their existence, no matter if you were the richest of rich or the poorest of poor. Some believed that they would be reincarnated in a fantasy world where they would be very powerful, go on adventures and form a harem for themselves.
It was mostly closed shut in otakus who believed that last part.
Nakamura Minato deeply hated each of these groups. As someone who died once he could tell that all three were wrong.
He was reincarnated, the shut in otakus got that part right, but not in a dream land or a heaven, no he reincarnated in a world that has gone to SHIT in a way that deserved those capital letters.
The world was, quite literally, drowning in pollution. Society had collapsed once, only to be rebuilt by corporation that had later on become ultra corporations that now had power to control everything in the country.
Pollution had reached to a point where going outside without safety equipment like gas masks or special glasses would end up with one either sick or dead.
Animals had also been hit hard by the pollution. More than half of the animal races that he knew of and many more that he didn't know of had went extinct. Even some of the livestock animals like pigs and goats.
Real food had become a luxury that only the rich could enjoy. Everyone else had to eat nutrient pastes and other similar things that had no taste at best or tasted like horse shit at worst.
So yeah, reincarnation sucked ass.
Minato had it easier and harder than others. Easier cause he was born into a wealthy family, as in wealthy enough that he probably would never have to work in his life. Not that he could as the hard part was that he was born paralyzed from the waist down. Something that had caused his new so called parents to view him as a failure before deciding to use it as a opportunity.
A RP opportunity.
He was used as a sob story family used for media and made people think of them as 'nice' people since they didn't just threw him away like yesterday's trash.
At least he didn't need to care for things like food and shelter like other people did but his life would end up being a pretty unsatisfying one.
Therefore most of his days were spent with internet. Mostly online games as looking at things like news or history would only depress him. He was ready to spend the rest of his time until his next death to simply go through the net. Until he found something that would change his life.
'YGGDRASIL, looking for beta players!'
An DMMO-RPG game where strength isn't everything. As the creators would say. A virtual reality game that was all about fantasy, Magic and adventure. None of which mattered to Minato. What mattered to him is what he remembered.
Overlord.
An isekai anime that was pretty much a power fantasy with dark themes following the story of an overpowered skeleton main character and his overpowered minions.
There were parts he didn't remember much, he had been reborn eighteen years ago with no more connections to his favorite anime and medias. But he did remember enough about it other than it being a power fantasy. Mostly the girls and some of the more traumatic tidbits.
He probably should have read the rest of the novels.
But such thing did not matter, only thing that mattered was the chance that this might be real.
That the chance of being a god among mortals was real.
"HahahahaHAHAHAHAH!" With those thoughts, Minato could not help but laugh. Making his parents wonder if he had finally went cuckoo.
\12 YEARS LATER/
It was almost time. Twelve years of grinding and trying to find new ways to make YGGDRASIL his bitch had paid off. Minato was ready to enter the game for the last time. But there was a certain fear in him. The time he had spent in the game had caused many changes in the guild of Ainz Ooal Gown. Far too many. So there was a fear of the end of the world not transporting him to the new world. A fear that had been gnawing his heart for the last few weeks.
In the end there was no other choice though.
Either he was wrong and the last twelve years had been a simple enjoyable memory. Or he was right and now about to become a god.
Minato put on the virtual reality helmet on and logged in.
