Chapter forty : Everly

I looked up at the man standing in front of me and then at his hand. Obviously he had read it, and it didn't take a genius to guess he was mad because he was at my door to confront me. Well, I had to agree though that it wasn't one of my brightest ideas. "Everly-"

"I baked a lemon pie today!" I blurted. He arched his brow and studied me for a moment before heading to the stairs, "come along," he said over his shoulder. And for a moment there I thought about shutting the door and not go after him. As if he read my thoughts, he turned around and looked me dead in the eye," Don't even think about it." I nodded and rushed to follow him.

He went for the kitchen when we got downstairs. I stood there like a kid who was caught red handed in the act and watched him as he opened the refrigerator and took the pie. He cut a piece for himself and looked up at me, I shook my head before he could ask and he shrugged. He grabbed a fork and took a bite, all the while his eyes fixed on me. I couldn't look away, rather I dared not look away. I stood frozen at my place, damn how could a man look so hot eating a stupid pie. The situation itself was strange enough, with him standing there in an impeccable three piece suit and me in my minion pajamas. No judgements, minions were cute and yes I owned a minion pajama set.

"So, all prepared for your tomorrow's test?" He asked taking another bite and nodded toward the breakfast bar. I headed toward it and settled on on of the high chairs. He put down the plate on the bar and pushed the envelope toward me. He stepped back and took off his suit jacket and threw it on the breakfast bar. Unable to look away I stared at him as he went on to remove his vest and threw it where his jacket was. He loosened his tie and opened the top two buttons of his crisp white shirt. "Sweetheart keep looking like that and the shirt's coming off too." He said with a smirk.

I was pulled back to the reality and cleared my throat, of course he was aware I was staring. I shook my head and looked away when he removed the cuff links and started folding up his sleeves. The way his muscles flexed under the shirt was simply erotic. I mean this man was definitely carved out of stone and put on the earth for the boon of mankind. I took a deep breath and gathered myself, I couldn't let myself get swayed by his looks. He was mad, even though he didn't seem but he was. I knew it. "Lucifer, look, this was just a joke. Nothing serious. Okay? I didn't mean any of that." I said.

"Oh really?" He reached out for the paper and held it in front of his face before reading it out loud. "Hope today's night was better than the last one and you didn't overwork yourself while giving company. PS - You owe me 200 bucks. Love, Everly." Keeping it back he looked at me, "So, none of it is serious?"

I laughed awkwardly and clapped my hands, his face still unreadable. He wasn't going to let it go. "The 200 bucks part is true." I murmured. When he didn't say anything I continued, "It was for the tip-"

"You gave a $200 tip. Aren't you a little too generous?" He smirked.

"Hey it wasn't my fault. I handed him a $20 bill first and he gave me a strange look and murmured something about you being so rich yet so stingy." I retorted.

"So you gave him a $200 tip?" He leaned back on the counter and folded his arms on his chest, his muscles flexing deliciously under his shirt. I shook my head and continued. Focus, Everly, focus.

"Actually there's a catch. I wanted to give him a $100 bill but I wasn't in my right mind and ended up giving him two bills instead. It wasn't until I came back upstairs I realized the blunder I made." I sighed. It was another reason why I didn't like the bouquet and felt irritated every time I looked at it. "And now I am broke." I put my head in my hands.

Lucifer stifled his laugh and came to sit across me, "Anyway, what is this all about?" He waved toward the note.

He was enjoying this. Fine, he wanted an answer, I'd surely give him one. I just couldn't contain my annoyance any longer and I wanted to wipe that stupid smirk off his face. "I told you I was angry and irritated too. And do you have any idea how difficult it was to make that freaking pie, I messed up twice but still made it for you, then you called up to tell about your meeting. It was fine until then, I understand you are a busy man and are bombarded with unplanned meetings quite often. But reading that stupid card pissed me right off. I was covered in flour for half the day and you were planning on spending beautiful nights with god knows which woman." I yelled out all of my frustration which had been piling up since yesterday. I knew he didn't deserve it because I had no right to interfere in his personal life, but the thought of him being with another woman did bad things to me.

I looked at Lucifer who was looking at me with an amused expression which riled me up even more, "Stop smiling, this is all your fault." I snapped.

"Okay. I'm sorry I wasn't able to make it on time, and the pie is delicious." He said smiling.

His stupid dimples always got me. "It's alright." I looked away knowing if I looked at his stupid smile even for a second I'd smile too and right now I was mad.

He got up to get himself another slice of the pie and this time he came around to my side. Standing behind me he placed the plate on the island but didn't sit. I turned to look at him but squealed when he picked me up and sit me on the island and settled down in my chair between my legs, putting us at eye level. "So," he wrapped his arms around my hips and pulled me closer "you were jealous about me spending night with another woman."

It was more of a statement than a question. I tried to push him away but he pulled me closer until I was on the edge. "Jealous? Me? Are you crazy? Why would I be jealous? You can move in with that Tiffany for all I care." Yes, how could I be jealous over something so trivial. What did he think he was, that I would be jealous over him.

"I see." He smirked and kissed the tip of my nose. Then he starting eating the pie, like it was the most normal thing for him to eat in this position. "Want a bite?" He asked when he caught me looking at him, I shook my head furiously. Like that would stop him. He brought a bite to my mouth, "Here you go."

I looked up at him and he arched his brow, I sighed and took the bite. I almost moaned when the rich flavors hit my tongue, the hours spent were surely worth it. When I looked back at him, his jaw was clenched and he was staring at me, now he surely looked mad. What did I do wrong now? His eyes flitted down to my mouth and he brought his hand to my face. His thumb lightly grazed my lower lip and that's when I saw the icing on it. Without breaking the eye contact he brought it to his mouth and licked it clean, "sweet," he muttered. My mouth dropped open. What the heck was that? And why was it so hot? I shook my head and pushed at him. He didn't fight and got up and put me down on my feet before I could jump. He kissed the top of my head and leaned in close to my ear, "Good night, sweetheart. Now up you go." He patted my the small of my back.

I murmured a good night and rushed up the stairs without turning back. To be honest I was too afraid to turn back and face him. I didn't stop until I reached my room and locked the door before slumping down in my bed. Now all I had to was get my heart under control and go to sleep. Both of which seemed impossible at the moment.
