Chapter eighteen : Everly

I looked outside at the speeding scenery. Thankfully I was able to make it out in time. It did take a lot of persuasion to make Linda to accept that phone and check and now what I hoped was he wouldn't follow me. I wouldn't be able to bear that. I could see the joy in his eyes when he presented me that check and I return it, I couldn't give him anything. I guessed it was for the best. But there was still one problem, my watch, he still had it and I needed it back. I'd look into later because at the moment my mind was preoccupied with a lot of stuff. As I leaned back in my seat I closed my eyes and sleep took me in.

I am ten years old and seated on a bench in an office, my orphanage head excuses herself and goes outside. She told me my new parents were great people and would look after all of my needs. I was elated. And now I sit here fidgeting with my stuffed tiger waiting for them. The door finally opens and three people step in. "Everly meet your new parents," she motions to the other two people beside her.

The man kneels down in front of me, "hello Everly I'll be your father from now and she–" he pointed at the woman who stood beside him, "will be your mother. We'll be taking care of you from now on." He smiled at me.

"Would like to come with us sweety?" The woman said.

Was that even a question? Of course I did and so I nod my head. The woman bends down and takes me in a hug, "oh my sweet daughter, " she mumbles and instantly I like her.

After my new parents finish their work, I say good bye to my friends and then make my way to the big car parked in front of the orphanage building. My new mother helps me get in.

We talk about a lot of stuff on the way to my new home. I tell them all about my previous school because they told me I had to change schools but it was fine by me my old school wasn't that good either. The car finally comes to a stop and my new father beams at me, "Looks like we're here Everly. Ready to see your new home?"

I nod excitedly and then he pushes open the door.

I stand in front of a huge house, it looks more like a castle though, similar to the ones in the fairytale I read. "Is that where I'll be living?" I point at the structure in front and they both nod. I grin and ask in a small voice, "Can I call you mom and dad?"

"Of course sweety," my mother leans down and kisses on my head. I couldn't be happier.

As we head inside they show me around the big house, it really is the size of a castle and then they show me my room which is also very big. It's the same size of the hall where all the children back in the orphanage stayed. My mother and father both kiss my forehead and leave. I finally had mom and dad.

I hear a rattle on the window and move forward to open it. The sky suddenly becomes dark and a cool gust of wind blows in followed by lightning and thunder. I try to close the window but the wind is too strong. I'm thrown back on the ground and see my room getting engulfed by darkness with dark figures coming out of shadows. I try to move away but I'm gripped by something coming out of the floor. I hear a loud shriek from the other side and then I jolted awake.

I looked around myself, still on the train, I'd dozed off. I was breathing heavily and my heart was racing. It'd been so long why was I still dreaming about them? I didn't want this again. I made a trip to the restroom and washed my face with cold water. It was going to be alright.

An hour later I got off at my station, I was finally back. Carrying my luggage to a near by bench, I plopped down. I looked online and booked myself a cab at an unbelievably high price. I waited for another half an hour when my phone pinged.

Walking out I immediately spotted the white sedan and walked to it. "Stop right there." A thunderous voice came from behind me and I knew who it was. I slowly turned around and saw Lucifer standing at the entrance of the station. He looked disheveled, his suit jacket, vest and tie was long gone. His black hair all messed up as if he had ran his hand through them all day. But what scared me was the look in his eyes, it was pure rage. Seemed the devil himself descended upon me. I stood there frozen while he made his way to me and in a matter of seconds he stood in front me. I could sense the anger coming out of him in waves. "She'll not be needing the car anymore," he said his eyes fixed on me. Then he paid the driver and the car was off. "Come," his voice was laced with anger which gave me chills.

"I won't. Why should I?" Yes make the mad man madder. Great Everly.

He arched his brow and I shook my head, determined to not move. He sighed and then muttered something like, "you asked for it."

He leaned down, wrapping his arm around my legs he threw me up on his shoulder. What the fuck? I struggled to get off but he secured me there with one hand on my legs and the other hand on my back. "Put me down!" I shouted and started punching his back, "You cannot do this!"

"You have no idea what I can do." He said.

I tried moving around but it was useless, this man was just too strong. I heard him open the car door and next he lowered me down onto the seat. I tried to jerk free but he put on the seatbelt for me and locked the door. I stared at him as he rounded to get onto his side. As soon as he'd open the door for himself I'll escape. But before I could get in action he was already beside me and putting on his seatbelt. He started the car and pulled out.

"You can't do this, you can't manhandle me like that!" I shouted again breaking the silence. And that bastard smirked, "I can do anything I want to you."

"Why? I've already paid you your money. What else do you need?"

He stepped on the breaks, I was jerked forward to the dashboard, "What was that for?" I shouted, my anger was rising and so was my voice.

His original dark brown eyes seemed darker, then he finally spoke, "Why did you leave?"

"Huh? Because I was supposed to. I had a train to catch, remember."

"I asked you to wait and you ran off Everly. Why?" He looked up at me and his eyes held a thing like disappointment. That did something to my heart. Why was he being like that?

"I did not run Lucifer. I told you I'd leave once I'd be done with Mathele. You knew it." I said calmly, it'd be useless if I started shouting too. Someone had to be calm.

"I asked you to wait but you fucking took off!" His voice rising with each word.

I did not like what I was seeing, I instinctively moved back in my seat. His eyes followed my movements, "Now you're scared of me," he laughed a humourless laugh. "Fucking answer me Everly!" He slammed his fist on the glass. My breath got caught up in my lungs, I could not take this, not again, he was reopening my wounds. My hand went back for the handle, I tried pulling it open, it was locked.

"You're not going anywhere sweetheart," he said calmly. No, no, I couldn't breathe. I had to get out. I continuously pulled at the handle but it didn't budge.

I heard something click open, Lucifer had removed his seatbelt and he turned in his seat, his face was unreadable. And then he reached for me. Images started flashing in my mind, I remembered what happened next, I dreaded it the most. I covered my head with my hands, "Please I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I won't do it again. I promise. Don't hurt me. Please. I beg you." The tears started streaming down.
