Beginning

He awoke, disoriented, and confused this wasn't his bed, he thought as he started looking around. The fog billowed towards him engulfing him like an enormous beast.

" Who goes there, I am your father " Alex yelled before bursting out laughing, well this is spooky as shit, the fog absorbed the sound as if nothing had ever been saying. Walking forwards into the fog Alex tried to remember what happened before he woke up here.

The last thing he recalled was walking down the street, it had just been a hard day at university, long hours spent working on some complicated piece of quantum mechanics. The streets were dark and gloomy, a cold winter breeze cut against your cheek, even with all the layers Alex still shivered as he strode down the pavement.

The lonely figure painted a bleak picture as he walked down the dark street, the tall buildings on either side framing it, a singular light shining down on behind him, casting a long drawn-out shadow.

Alex had finally decided it was time to go home after a particularly intense day of revision, griding through the masses of past exams desperately trying to pass his final year. He could wait to get home and satisfy his guilty pleasure, of reading eastern fantasy fiction. One of his favourites was Martial World he was getting to the end of the book, which was an epic journey about how a young boy Lin Ming began in the smallest kingdom on the mortal plane fighting and struggling to survive. Through fate and his iron will become the strongest in his universe, even travelling to another and inadvertently helping create the strongest cultivator in that universe (True Martial World).

He never understood how almost every author's obsession with swords, nearly every novel he had read had a sword-wielding protagonist. The sword is so overdone he thought, why not a different weapon there are so many to choose from. Plus, while the sword is the weapon of the king, the spear is the emperor of weapons, ruler of the battlefield why not wield a spear instead? A spear has a longer reach and through that reach, you can deal a blow with more force.

Alex walked the long journey home daydreaming about brandishing a spear and fighting his way across the three realms, just as he was about to slay the antagonist, the main villain he was snapped out of his review by a chilling scream.

Soon after he saw a woman running, the black eyeliner she had been wearing was running down her face, arms flailing in the air, she was terrified out of her mind.

Worried he asked " What's wrong "

" They, they tried " she stammered in between breaths, the fear in her eyes said what she couldn't. Someone had attacked her, and desperate to get away, she had screamed and run off.

She didn't stop for long though, fearing whatever attacked her she started running again. Brushing right past him, off into the night. As quickly as she appeared, she vanished, Alex wasn't sure if he had daydreamed about her appearance.

Alex continued walking forward into the streets, peering forward hoping to see a glimpse of the man that had frightened the women so, but the flickering streetlamp gave little to no light. Torn between wanting to find the person responsible and hoping he wouldn't be there Alex froze incapable of deciding, but his decision was made for him.

Out of the mist, a shadowy figure started to emerge, as he got close Alex realised there were odd peculiarities about the figure. For one, it was too tall towering over him, easily double or even triple his height and its gait was wrong almost as if it was walking on four feet. As the figure came out of the mist, the first thing Alex noticed was the teeth, teeth so large they were unable to fit inside the creature's mouth, and the creature was as if no animal on earth resembled the beast. The closest comparison was a gorilla, but no gorilla was this big or had teeth so ferocious and those blood-red eyes that spoke of only violence and death.

Alex now understood the women's inability to speak, the aura of this beast was enough to make a grown man run screaming in terror. Just as Alex turned to run, the beast leap forward barrelling toward him far fast than any cheetah. Bang, it collided with Alex smashing him backwards, and flying through the air until a sickening thud was heard. Alex had slammed into the wall with enough force to destroy his spine. Sliding down to the floor, ribs shattered stabbing into his lungs, even the darkness of the night couldn't hide the wet gleam of blood on the wall above him.

As the beast walked forward towards its victim, Alex saw his life flash before his eyes, the loving childhood, the endless support of his parents, his first love, her cruel manipulative ways painted in a rosy hue in these final moments. His current girlfriend, her beautiful smile and kindness she had always shown him, was ever the supportive girlfriend.

I at least need to say goodbye, Alex thought as he tried to reach for his phone, , the injuries he had sustained meant that even moving his arms was impossible. The last sight of our protagonist was the beast's large mouth closing in on him, then it faded to black.
