John appeared rather ashamed now. “Indeed. Unfortunately, things didn’t go according to plan. Cindy was in love with Wayne, something I hadn’t known about initially, and she had tried to murder James instead.”
Zeke was astonished to hear that. It was obvious James didn’t realize that either. Zeke could feel James’s emotion loud and clear inside him.
“How did you know about Cindy’s—”
“I had my ways.”
John’s expression was horrifying now, and Zeke didn’t need to be a mind-reader to know what was inside the older man’s head. Based on what little of James’s memories Zeke was able to access, he knew John would do whatever was needed in order to acquire what he wanted in life. He was certain Cindy must have been tortured, and possibly murdered. He needed to know for sure, though.
“What happened to Cindy?”
John sneered. “I’m sure you’re intelligent enough to guess. It’s enough for you to know her infant daughter became an orphan overnight thirty years ago.”
