Chapter 53

I got back with our meals, burgers and fries from a fast food place, to find him lying on his good side, asleep. I was tempted to let him, but we had to eat, then pack and get out of there. All it took to wake him was waving one of the burgers under his nose. He eyed it sleepily, then sat, with my help, to scarf it and the fries down. I ate mine, helped him get dressed, and then packed us up.

Since it wouldn’t be dark for another hour, we watched the news. Tanner’s death was still in the headlines. The police told the reporter they had two persons of interest in custody.

“I wonder who,” I said.

“With luck, some of Tanner’s people, or a couple of local dealers. Either way, it should make our leaving easier.”

Since the cops already had someone under arrest, I suggested we should wait another day so Coop could heal some more. He immediately put the kibosh on that idea.
