Chapter 50

We got to the stand of trees at the corner of the lot. While Coop stood watch, I climbed the tallest one until I was straddling a thick branch, a good ten feet off the ground. From there, I had an excellent view into a room at the back of the house. There was dim light coming in through, I presumed, an open door.

I got down, and then signaled to Coop that we should check the far side of the house, using the neighbor’s trees as cover. When we did, we saw lights were on in what we figured was the living room. Unfortunately, the curtains were drawn over the two windows. Easing our way forward, to get a better view of the front of the house, we found the curtains were closed over those windows, too.

Putting his mouth close to my ear, Coop whispered, “It looks like it’s from the back, or nothing. I wonder when the bastard heads to bed.”

“We’re going to find out,” I whispered back.
