My phone vibrated again. This time Coop’s text said, Wife with couple from his work. Seems settled in with them. Look up

I did and spotted him. He nodded to the far end of the mezzanine where there were at least half a dozen tables. I didn’t see her, but obviously he did. I gave a quick thumbs-up.

“Hey,” the diplomat said, speaking to me. “Be a bud and get me another one of these?” He gave me his glass, weaving slightly in the process. I did as he asked. I guess I was his supplier now, as far as he was concerned, because ten minutes later he again held out his empty glass to me.

I went to get him a fresh drink. On my way back, I saw him walking, make that staggering, toward the hallway. I followed. He went into the men’s room at the end of the hallway. Luck was with me. It was empty. When I got inside, I twisted the knob to lock it.
