Luke put something in the bed of the truck with a thump and crawled back into the driver’s seat. We rode in silence for a while until Luke spoke up.
“Sooo… can we talk about the elephant in the room?”
“Your fiancé?” I sneered like a jealous child. I should have been embarrassed by my response. But I was too emotionally fried to even care. And as petty as it was, it was mostly for deflection. I really wasn’t ready to talk about being pregnant. Because I still could not believe that I actually was pregnant. I felt certain that I’d wake up from this absurd nightmare any second.
“My what?” Luke laughed pulling me from my thoughts. “No. I meant about you being… you know…”
I did not respond.
“Andy, are you really pregnant?”
“I don’t want to talk about it,” I muttered.
We bumped along the dirt road in silence again for a moment.
“Would you tell me if it was mine?” he asked.
